We have a very interesting game for this week's pirate pick. Fatal Fury 2 for the Famicom is just another fighter that felt short in awesomeness but the potential was there. Released by Cony corp. Fatal Fury 2 was just another clone of a Street Fighter game. Cony was also responsible for bringing out most of the Street Fighter pirates and the fighting engine was pretty much the same. Unlike Street Fighter IV, this one felt short in both gameplay and fun-factor. Why don't we take a look at all of the four factors and break them through.
Lets start with music. As usual with most pirate originals, the music is nothing great but it's there nonetheless. The sound effects tend to annoy more than mimic the effect of what's really happening. The music is OK at most, but once more falls short from being a decent sound track. If you have played many other pirate originals for the Famicom, I'm sure you can relate some of the same sound effects from other games. You might even find sound effects of official releases.
The graphics are forgettable. The game blinks so much that you can't even see your fighter completely during the fight. He/she is always disappearing for moments which makes the game even harder to play as you can't see what you are doing. The backgrounds are unimaginative as you can't appreciate them. With blinking characters and lame backgrounds, this game falls short once more.
the gameplay delivers yet another frustrating experience. You not only have the problems of previous pirate fighters but moves are very tough to perform. Also, for some reason your opponent is almost always stronger than you. The flying kick you hit your opponent with won't be as devastating as when they hit you the same way. There is a lack of balance in the battle that makes it very tough to pull off even a single victory. With the controls being buggy and non-effective, you might as well end up fighting with your console rather than in the game.
This game is for one playthrough and that's that. If you really want a challenge, you better have guts to play through this game. First things first, just try to get through the first fighter. The game doesn't bring any fun-factor at replaying it unless you get drunk and play against your friend. Now, that's the only way I can see you having fun with this game over and over. Sometimes, we need to be a little tipsy in order to enjoy certain things.
The game is just another average pirate but it had potential but not enough refining. There are way too many games like this that if given a second chance they would have been hits. So that's enough for this week, until next week! Arrrr!
