Ultima Exodus Remastered

When it was released in 1988, Ultima: Exodus was revolutionary, and proof that the RPGs that were already popular on microcomputers could be ported to home consoles. However, the original game had its flaws, and the NES version added its own.

This patch not only fixes bugs and restores missing text and clues, but also updates the graphics, reintroduces enemies that were only found in the computer versions, and improves the gameplay without completely altering it.

Gone are the days of grinding low level monsters for 95% of a playthrough: now levelling up is actually rewarding and encouraged. Higher level characters receive buffs and special abilities, magic users become more powerful and their spells have better chances to succeed, and more dangerous monsters and dungeons also give the best loot.

Note that this isn’t an “easy mode” patch: the game is still punishing, but not in an unfair and unfun way. The player will progress through their quest to defeat Exodus.

A partial list of what’s on offer in Ultima: Exodus Remastered (see the Release Notes for an extensive list):

Updated, more user-friendly UI
Bug fixes
Many Quality-Of-Life changes
Improved “3D” dungeon view
Graphics inspired to Ultima IV-VI
NPC portraits in dialogues
Lootable weapons/armour
New enemy AI makes battles faster and more tactical
Battle/magic systems rebalance
More distinct Professions, each with their own stats and abilities
Horses actually make map movement faster over certain terrain types and are not just cosmetic
Note that this hack does not alter sound/music and is aimed at being compatible with future sound/music hacks.

Have fun exploring Sosaria again!

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons - DragonLance: Dragons of Flame
"Game Review - by Spinner 8
This, I think, is the sequel to Heroes of the Lance. Heroes of the Lance is, well, barely playable, and therefore not very fun. Dragons of Flame turns the Playable up a few notches, but the game still manages to be not very fun. To me, anyways. For starters, there’s an overworld now. And you can go talk to people, who respond in Japanese! Whee! And monsters run into you, Zelda II-style, and then you fight them in a side-view, also Zelda II-style. Except, the monsters beat the hell out of you and you can’t really do much about it. Except heal constantly. Whee, just like a real RPG! Okay I’m done."

Adventure Island 4 Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Shima IV

"Again, Demi does a great job translating this game, fortunately leaving out the “yaya” stuff that’s been in some of his earlier work. And the title screen is super sweet, even though I took the pic in NESticle and the colors are all weird. Now go thank him right now for allowing you to play this gem! Right now goddammit!"

Adventures of Musashi

"The hacking and translation for this game are both really great, especially when you consider that DW-type RPGs are a pain in the ass to translate. Believe me, I’ve been there. The readme says there’s still some bugs, but I got about an hour, maybe two hours into it with no problems. So at the very least, you can play this for five minutes and laugh at how cool it is before you move on to the next rom in your collection. I wouldn’t recommend it though. Cmon, the game’s fun!"

Airwolf

"Please, for the love of God, don’t confuse this game with the American release of Airwolf, the horrible Acclaim “game” that involves you spinning your first-person-view cockpit around in circles and being attacked by spheres of varying color. Totally different game here.
This one is, pretty much, a sidescrolling shooter. Whee. Airwolf is different from other shooters in that, uhh… well, your weapons really suck. And at your basic power level, you can only have one on-screen at a time! Too much crazy NES fun! Then at the end of a level you fight some kind of first-person boss fight, or something."

Akira

"This is one of those very heavily text-based kind of adventure games, where you move the pointer around and click on things, and you’re given a description of it, and stuff. Maybe it gets different later on, but I just said OH MY GOD JAPANESE ADVENTURE GAME and ran away screaming. But now I’m back writing this. Um, yeah."

Juuouki aka Altered Beast

"This is a version of Altered Beast that is stripped-down for the NES. As such, it’s more-or-less just another pretty unremarkable (and frustrating) side-scrolling beat-’em-up. For those unfamiliar with Altered Beast, the gist of the game is that you are a warrior who comes back from the dead to punch and kick monsters through various levels because a god told you to. However, this is where THE GIMMICK comes in – as you collect power-ups, your warrior will gradually lose his clothes and grow larger man-boobs! Collect enough, and you can turn into some sort of were-animal, ranging from the slightly useful (wolf) to the absolutely ridiculous (teddy bear). So it’s sort of like a beat-’em-up meets hentai game meets furry fantasy."
