The Latest Finds
1. Front Page Sports: Baseball Pro '98
A great find for fans of classic baseball simulations! Front Page Sports: Baseball Pro '98 brings the strategy and management side of America's favorite pastime to the PC. The Front Page Sports series was known for offering detailed sports simulations, and baseball fans could enjoy managing teams and experiencing the sport in a more involved way than a typical arcade-style game.
2. NHL 98
Hockey fans will recognize this classic EA Sports release! NHL 98 was part of EA's popular NHL series and featured fast-paced hockey action, recognizable NHL teams, and the presentation that helped make EA Sports a household name among sports gamers. It's a wonderful addition for anyone who remembers the era when PC sports games were becoming increasingly sophisticated.
3. Amazon Trail
Time to head into the Amazon rainforest! Amazon Trail is an educational adventure that combines exploration, geography, wildlife, and learning. Players travel through the Amazon region, encounter its natural environment, and discover more about the area's ecosystems and cultures.
Games like this helped define educational PC gaming in the 1990s, making learning feel like an adventure rather than a classroom assignment. It's also a fun reminder of the era when computer games were frequently used in schools and homes as educational tools.
4. Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad
Not every collection addition has to be a game! This Microsoft SideWinder gamepad is a nice piece of classic PC gaming hardware. Microsoft's SideWinder line helped bring controller-style gaming to Windows PCs, offering an alternative to the keyboard for players who preferred a more console-like experience.
Accessories like these played an important role in making PC gaming more accessible to players who grew up with traditional video game consoles.
5. Bass Masters Classic: Tournament Edition
Fishing games have long been a unique part of gaming history, and Bass Masters Classic: Tournament Edition brings competitive bass fishing to the computer. Players can experience the challenge of choosing the right equipment, finding productive fishing locations, and trying to land the big catch.
It's a perfect addition for anyone who appreciates the more unusual corners of the classic PC gaming library.
6. Cabela's Big Game Hunter II
Grab your gear and head into the wilderness! Cabela's Big Game Hunter II is a hunting simulation that focuses on tracking and hunting wildlife in outdoor environments. The Cabela's franchise became well known for bringing hunting experiences to video games, and titles like this offered a very different experience from the usual action and sports releases.
For collectors, it's another interesting example of how many specialized gaming genres found a home on the PC.
7. Sierra Front Page Sports: Golf
Golf fans get some attention in this haul, too! Front Page Sports: Golf brings the sport to the PC with a simulation-focused approach. Rather than simply offering arcade-style swings, golf games from this era aimed to capture the challenge of playing a round, accounting for course conditions, and trying to improve your performance.
It's a nice piece of the broader Front Page Sports family and a reminder of Sierra's place in the world of classic computer gaming.
8. The Oregon Trail III: Pioneer Adventures
One of the most recognizable educational gaming franchises returns with The Oregon Trail III: Pioneer Adventures. The Oregon Trail series introduced generations of players to the challenges of traveling west across 19th-century America.
Players must navigate the journey, make decisions, manage supplies, and deal with the many hardships that could face pioneers along the trail. The series blended history and gameplay in a way that made it a memorable part of many childhoods.
For anyone who grew up playing educational games on school computers, finding another Oregon Trail title is always a treat!
9. Risk: The Game of Global Domination
Ready to conquer the world? Risk: The Game of Global Domination brings the classic strategy board game to the computer. Players compete for territories, build armies, and attempt to dominate the world map through a combination of planning, alliances, and dice rolls.
The digital version captures the appeal of the tabletop game while offering a convenient way to experience its large-scale battles. It's a great addition for fans of strategy games and classic board-game adaptations.
10. Boards & Blades 2
This one adds a different flavor to the collection! Boards & Blades 2 brings extreme sports action to the PC, with a focus on the kind of skateboarding and board-sport excitement that became increasingly popular during the 1990s.
The period was a fascinating time for sports gaming, as developers explored everything from traditional sports to newer action-oriented activities. It's always fun to discover titles that capture the interests and trends of their era.
11. Trophy Bass
Another fishing classic joins the lineup! Trophy Bass is a fishing simulation from Sierra that lets players experience the challenge of bass fishing through a computer game. It focuses on the techniques and decisions involved in finding fish and landing a successful catch.
Fishing simulations became a surprisingly established niche on the PC, appealing to players who wanted a slower, more methodical gaming experience. This is a great companion to Bass Masters Classic: Tournament Edition in the growing collection.
12. NHL 99
Last but certainly not least, we have NHL 99, another excellent EA Sports hockey title. Released in 1998, this entry continued the series' push toward realistic hockey gameplay and authentic NHL presentation.
Having both NHL 98 and NHL 99 together makes for a particularly fun pair of additions. It's a small snapshot of how annual sports franchises evolved during the late 1990s, with each new installment building on the foundations of the previous game.
Why These Finds Matter
One of the things I love most about collecting vintage PC games is the sheer variety. Console gaming often gets much of the attention when people talk about retro gaming, but the PC had an incredible library of its own.
This haul highlights several sides of that history:
Sports simulations: NHL 98, NHL 99, Front Page Sports: Baseball Pro '98, and Front Page Sports: Golf.
Outdoor and fishing games: Trophy Bass, Bass Masters Classic: Tournament Edition, and Cabela's Big Game Hunter II.
Educational adventures: Amazon Trail and The Oregon Trail III: Pioneer Adventures.
Strategy gaming: Risk: The Game of Global Domination.
Classic PC gaming accessories: The Microsoft SideWinder gamepad.
These games represent a period when PC gaming offered something for practically everyone, whether you wanted to manage a baseball team, explore the rainforest, conquer the world, or spend an afternoon fishing.
Another Great Addition to Retro Gaming Life!
I'm excited to add these titles to the Retro Gaming Life collection. Every new find is another opportunity to preserve a little piece of gaming history and revisit the software, hardware, and experiences that made retro gaming so special.
The 1990s PC gaming era was packed with creativity, experimentation, and memorable titles, and this latest batch is a perfect example of that variety.
Don't forget about these keyboards. You can still run into them from time to time. I always pick them up so I can have extras for my old computers.
There was also a USB floppy drive which I got but no floppies in sight. It would've been great to get some floppies! They are always welcomed!
Which of these games do you remember playing? Did you grow up with The Oregon Trail, spend hours playing EA Sports hockey, or enjoy the more unusual world of classic fishing and hunting simulations? Let me know in the comments!
