🐾 Mouser Finds #001: Floppies, Switch Boxes & a Robot!
Retro Gaming Life’s newest treasure-hunting correspondent has arrived.
Welcome to the premiere edition of Mouser Finds, a brand-new feature here at Retro Gaming Life where one very special retro enthusiast searches the world for forgotten gaming treasures, weird old tech, and anything else that makes our retro-loving hearts beat a little faster.
And who better to lead the hunt than Mouser the Retro Cat?
She may have four paws, whiskers, and a serious case of resting judgment face, but Mouser has an excellent eye for retro goodies. For her very first expedition, she came across a collection that proves you don't need a rare console or expensive cartridge to have a fantastic retro find.
📼 Find #1: A Box of Floppies
First up, Mouser discovered not one, but two boxes of 3M Imation High Density 3.5-inch floppy disks.
If you grew up with computers in the '90s and early 2000s, these are instantly recognizable. Before USB drives, cloud storage, and gigantic hard drives, a little plastic disk could feel like a technological miracle.
And for retro gamers, floppy disks have a special place in history.
They carried computer games, save files, utilities, mods, shareware, and all sorts of digital treasures. A 1.44 MB floppy might sound hilariously tiny today, but back then it was enough to hold something you actually needed—and the satisfying click of sliding one into a floppy drive is pure nostalgia.
Mouser's verdict?
"Still more reliable than trusting the cat with your save files."
She's got a point.
🎮 Find #2: The S-Video/AV System Selector
Next up is perhaps the most immediately exciting find for a retro gamer: an S-Video/AV System Selector.
The packaging advertises compatibility with systems including the Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, N64, Dreamcast, DVD/VCR players, and CD players.
Anyone who has ever owned a pile of retro consoles knows exactly why something like this was useful.
Instead of constantly crawling behind the television to swap cables every time you wanted to change systems, a selector box let you keep multiple devices connected at once.
And there's something wonderfully authentic about the packaging. The purple-and-black design, the CRT television illustration, the list of compatible systems—it's a perfect little snapshot of the era when the entertainment center could contain a PlayStation 2, GameCube, Dreamcast, VCR, DVD player, and probably three remotes you could never identify.
Today, modern HDMI switchers have made this kind of hardware much less glamorous.
But for a retro setup?
This is exactly the kind of oddball accessory that belongs in the collection.
Mouser approves.
Mostly because it gives her another box to sit next to.
🤖 Find #3: ROBOT!
And then there's the robot.
Because every good treasure hunt needs a robot.
The colorful transforming robot in Mouser's haul looks like it came straight out of the golden age of transforming toys. With its bright red, blue, yellow, and silver parts, it certainly knows how to make an entrance.
Is it gaming-related?
Not necessarily.
Does that matter?
Absolutely not.
One of the things we love about collecting retro is that the hobby isn't really limited to consoles and cartridges. Old toys, electronics, computer hardware, advertisements, accessories, and forgotten pieces of pop culture all help tell the story of the era.
And frankly, if Mouser finds a robot, Mouser shows us the robot.
That's the rule.
🐱 Mouser's First Haul
So what did our newest Retro Gaming Life correspondent bring home from her first adventure?
✔ Two boxes of 3.5-inch high-density floppy disks
✔ An S-Video/AV System Selector
✔ One extremely colorful robot
✔ One very serious-looking retro cat
Not bad for the first episode.
And that's really what Mouser Finds is all about.
We're not necessarily looking for the most expensive or rarest items. We're looking for the interesting stuff—the things that make you stop and say, "Oh wow, I remember those!"
Sometimes it's a game.
Sometimes it's a console.
Sometimes it's a strange accessory you haven't seen in 25 years.
And sometimes...
it's a cat sitting behind a pile of floppy disks while judging your entire collection.
