Finds 2058: Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System

New Arrival: Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System

Every retro game collector has that one pickup that instantly becomes the centerpiece of the shelf. This week, that honor goes to Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System — one of the most legendary RPGs of the 8-bit era and easily one of the crown jewels in Sega’s classic library.

Holding this box in hand feels like stepping back into 1988. The clean grid-style cover art, the bold SEGA branding, and the classic “Ages 10 to Adult” label all scream late-80s console gaming. It’s a reminder of a time when RPGs felt mysterious, massive, and unlike anything else on store shelves.

Released in Japan in 1987 and later in North America in 1988, Phantasy Star was Sega’s ambitious answer to the growing popularity of console RPGs. But instead of copying the medieval fantasy formula everyone expected, Sega and developer Tokuhiko Uwabo delivered something different: a science-fantasy adventure filled with alien worlds, futuristic technology, and first-person dungeon crawling.

You play as Alis Landale, one of gaming’s earliest female protagonists, on a quest for revenge against the tyrannical King Lassic after the death of her brother. Along the way, you recruit allies, explore planets in the Algol star system, and uncover secrets that made the game feel enormous for its time.

What really made Phantasy Star stand out back then was the presentation. The Master System wasn’t known for RPG dominance, but this game pushed the hardware hard with colorful graphics, animated enemies, detailed environments, and impressive pseudo-3D dungeon sequences. Seeing those dungeons rotate and scale on an 8-bit console was mind-blowing in the late ‘80s.

The game also shipped with battery-backed save support, which was a huge deal during the era. No more writing down endless passwords after every session. For RPG fans in the 1980s, that felt futuristic.

Today, original copies of Phantasy Star are highly sought after by collectors. Complete-in-box editions especially have become prized items in Sega collections because of the game’s historical importance and relatively limited production compared to Nintendo’s RPG catalog. Even decades later, the artwork and packaging still look fantastic sitting on a shelf.

This pickup feels extra special because it represents a time when Sega was experimenting, taking risks, and trying to prove that the Master System could compete with the NES in genres beyond arcade action. Games like Phantasy Star helped build the foundation for Sega’s later RPG legacy on the Genesis and beyond.

It’s always exciting adding another retro title to the collection, but every now and then you land a game that carries real history with it. Phantasy Star is absolutely one of those games.

What’s your favorite classic Sega RPG?

Finds 2050: Crystalis for Gameboy Color

A Legendary Adventure Joins the Collection: Crystalis on Game Boy Color 🎮✨

Every now and then, a pickup comes along that feels a little more special than the rest—and this latest addition definitely fits that description. I’ve added Crystalis for the Game Boy Color to the collection, and it’s a title with some serious retro RPG pedigree.

⚔️ A Classic Reimagined for Handheld

Originally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Crystalis became a cult favorite thanks to its blend of action combat and RPG mechanics—something that felt ahead of its time. This Game Boy Color version brings that same post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure into a portable format, letting players take the journey anywhere.

You step into the role of a hero awakened from cryogenic sleep in a world rebuilt after catastrophe, wielding elemental swords and uncovering secrets as you go. It’s got that perfect mix of exploration, combat, and mystery that defined late-era NES classics.

🎨 Portable Nostalgia with a Twist

What makes this version especially interesting is how it adapts the original experience for handheld play. The visuals are reworked with color, the interface is streamlined, and the pacing feels slightly adjusted for shorter sessions—perfect for on-the-go gaming.

While some purists still prefer the NES original, this port has carved out its own identity over time, making it a unique piece for collectors who appreciate alternate versions of classic games.

📦 Collector Appeal

Finding Crystalis complete in box for Game Boy Color is a great score. The box art pops with that classic fantasy energy, and seeing it in such clean condition makes it a standout display piece. It’s one of those titles that immediately catches the eye on a shelf—especially among other handheld classics.

🧠 Why This One Matters

This isn’t just another addition—it’s a piece of gaming history that represents a transition period where developers were experimenting with bringing deeper console-style experiences to handheld systems. Titles like Crystalis helped pave the way for the portable RPG boom that followed.

🎯 Final Thoughts

Adding Crystalis to the collection feels like adding a hidden gem—one that might not always be in the spotlight but absolutely deserves recognition. Between its legacy, gameplay, and collectible value, this is a win all around.

If you’re into retro RPGs or Game Boy Color collecting, this is definitely one to keep on your radar.

Did you ever play Crystalis—on NES or Game Boy Color? Which version do you prefer?

Retro Gaming Life Showcase: Magic Knight Rayearth (Gameboy)

A Classic Anime Adventure on the Go

Originally based on the popular anime and manga series by CLAMP, Magic Knight Rayearth brings a unique blend of fantasy storytelling and turn-based RPG mechanics to the Game Boy. Released in Japan by Tomy, this title never officially received an English release—making translated versions especially valuable today.

Now, thanks to dedicated fan efforts, English-speaking players can finally experience the full story and dialogue as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Story & Gameplay

You take control of three schoolgirls—Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu—who are transported to the magical world of Cephiro. Tasked with becoming the legendary Magic Knights, they must restore balance and save the realm from chaos.

Gameplay follows a traditional RPG format:

  • Turn-based battles
  • Exploration across fantasy landscapes
  • Character progression and equipment upgrades
  • Story-driven dialogue (now fully accessible in English!)

Despite the Game Boy’s limitations, the game delivers a surprisingly rich experience with charming pixel art and memorable character moments.

Why This Version Stands Out

What makes this cartridge special is the English translation. For years, this title was locked behind a language barrier for many retro gamers. Now, you can:

  • Fully understand the story and character interactions
  • Navigate menus and battles with ease
  • Experience the game the way it was intended

For collectors, it’s also a standout piece thanks to its custom presentation and vibrant cartridge shell—perfect for display or play.

Unknown Realm: An 8-bit RPG for PC and Commodore 64 Kickstarter!

Well this is a pretty awesome kickstarter that has reached its goal of $65,536 dollars! The game is going to be released for both PC and Commodore 64. The
game is similar to the Ultima series games and looks and plays pretty awesome.
A lot of old school gamers will definitely feel at home in this adventure. You are welcomed
to go to the Kickstarter to give your part as the more help will only benefit the game.

I'm definitely going to pick up a copy to review when it's released. The game definitely looks like a lot of fun. It's a classic RPG after all. My favorite genre. Thank you for your support!

Retro Gaming News: Final Fantasy Ultra

"A Final Fantasy hack, five years in the making. The philosophy is to add and change as much as possible for the better, while still staying true to the spirit of the game.
Here is a list of improvements.
  • 12 classes at the start instead of 6
  • Each class is especially good at one thing and average to bad at everything else.
  • Except the Fool class, who is bad at everything.
  • Battle animations sped up.
  • Spells are divided into direct (the top two spells in a store) and indirect (the bottom half).
  • Many spells added and altered.
  • Spell names changed to be clearer as to what they do (SHLD instead of FOG, CLNS instead of PURE, etc.)
  • Every level of magic has a single target damage spell and all enemies spell.
  • FIRE only hits one enemy, making the HARM spell better against armies of undead.
  • Generally less spells that kill or stone in one hit.
  • More spells can be cast, especially for dedicated casters.
  • Intellect influences the power of spells.
  • Healing is much stronger
  • Spell damage is also stronger, but since hitpoints have also increased, damage spells are only relatively stronger for casters with high intelligence.
  • Enemies use more abilities, and do so in more interesting ways
  • More interesting battle formations
  • More interesting enemy properties, such as regeneration and elemental properties.
  • TMPR spell works properly.
  • Everything has more hit points, making fights more tactical.
  • Enemies drop less gold, making chests much more attractive, and forcing the player to choose between which items they want to buy the most.
  • Only two types of armor (Body and Shield) so there’s more room to store magical items.
  • Only the 10 magical items can cast spells.
  • Poison and regeneration is now at 10%.
  • Any combination of classes (without twins or Fools) can properly beat the game.
  • No combination of classes is remarkably better at beating the game than another.
Dungeons:
  • Added escape teleports in most of the dungeons, making it more attractive to level up where the action and gear is.
  • Balanced game to make full trip through whole dungeon on first try very hard, but rewarding to go in, get some loot, restock and go in again to get further. Most dungeons take around three trips to complete.
  • Most fights can be run away from, except on ‘tiled’ squares. Dragons, Mindflayers, Eyes and Bosses are not runnable.
  • Getting the Ship, Papyrus, Oxyale and Crown requires doing a dungeon.
  • Four extra dungeons to do after Tiamat.
  • All sorts of new paths and new tricks.
  • Dungeons feature items found in nearby towns, giving incentive to try to get the items there instead of just buying them in shop.
  • End dungeons feature special end-game weapons for each class.
  • Boss battles made much more interesting.
Overworld
  • Dash button added.
  • Player can immediately go to Dwarf Cave, which is a tough trip but grants extra gold.
  • Player doesn’t need Ship to get to Elves.
  • Player doesn’t need Airship beat the game, as ports have been removed.
  • Three places where player can fight against tougher enemies for experience boost if they’re into that kind of thing (like the original PoP).
  • You now save a prince instead of a princess. Corneria has two queens. For gender diversity.
  • Secret overpowered enemies for bragging rights.
  • Mystic Key only unlocks items in Dwarf Cave, Elf Castle and Human Castle.
  • No poison inducing enemies until the Elf area (by then the player should have some CLNS potions.)
Other:
  • Hundreds of tweaks not worth mentioning.
  • Years of polish thanks to dozens of playthroughs and feedback from playtesters.
Credit is due to PinkPuff for letting me build upon their hack, Final Fantasy Negative One.

Retro Gaming News: Unprecedented Crisis 3.0

"This will likely be the last significant update to Unprecedented Crisis, barring any major game-breaking bug reports. This update features:
  • The FF4kster config folder is now included in the zip, so if you wish to edit the rom in FF4kster, you can do so with everything labelled correctly (well, pretty much everything).
  • There is now something special that happens when you beat the game with solo Cecil. In addition, a different special thing will happen based on whether you beat it with solo Dark Knight or solo Paladin. You’ll have to do it to find out what, but let’s just say there’s more to it than just a modified ending sequence.
  • In order to make it a little easier to accomplish the above, the Aegis shield now has its KO immunity back, and a different solution to the Shadow dragon lock has been implemented."

Retro Game of the Week 147: Lufia -The Legend Returns- (GBC)

The game that revived the series after so many years was released on the Gameboy Color. The game is quite difficult but good overall. This is your classic dungeon exploring grinding RPG. Not only that but you can have up to nine members in your group. That's a lot of power! This is the follow up to the second game for the SNES although they don't have much in common. This is by far one of my favorite series but I shall never forgive the atrocity of the DS game.... ugh! Lets take a look!

The music is amazing! Classic RPG Lufia music to the best of the Gameboy's capabilities. The game uses the right tones for the right places. There aren't that many games that get it so right. This is your classic RPG at its finest.
The color gives this game life in many ways. You feel like if you're playing a NES version of Lufia at some point. It's beautiful. The character art is great as well and the world looks fantastic. Pix-elated beauty!
The game is as tough as ever. You'll have to grind and find a way to get past certain bosses even with nine party members, you'll have a hard time. The game challenges even the most strategic RPGers. The usual shop to get stronger weapons is here as well as the fields where you can level up till your heart is content. One thing you should know, the dungeons change every time you exit from them! This keeps the dungeons fresh every single time. It's quite unique and interesting.

The game has dungeons that change every time you get out of them so that definitely keeps the game fresh. I'm no sure if you want to go through all the trouble again but with such an intriguing story and fresh gameplay I'm going to say that it has a pretty decent replay value.

The game is quite good and above average in all levels. You should play this game if you're into something fresh and especially into RPGs. The game is also quite affordable so if you want to get a physical copy, go for it! Till next month!

Game-bit of the day 357: Dragon Warrior 1 + 2 (GBC)

There is nothing better than to have two games in one. Here are the first two of an amazing RPG series. Dragon Warrior 1 + 2 brings the first two games in the series to the Gameboy Color. Get ready for some classic RPG action!

Retro Game of the Week 145: Final Fantasy Legend 3 (Gameboy)

The original gameboy brought us a massive amount of classics. A lot of them stayed obscured because we weren't ready for the RPG revolution we take for granted today. Back in the day, RPG was just something very few gamers found any association with. Nowadays, we praise all the amazing releases by companies such as Atlus and NIS. Squaresoft though, brought to us a series that ended up putting the genre on the map. Final Fantasy 3 Legend was the third installment of a very odd series. The history of this game is quite interesting as it only adapted the Final Fantasy name so that people would familiarize it with the series on the NES and SNES. Other than that, the game plays as any other RPG with some interesting elements added to it. Lets take a look!

The music score can get quite boring especially when you have to grind and level up before going to the next dungeon. The sound effects are not bad either but it left a lot to love especially with a game carrying Final Fantasy on the cover.

The game does look good even after all these years. The sprites are overused since you can tell some of them are from the previous games which is a shame. They got lazy!

This is your typical RPG where you need to grind and level up before heading to the next level. The monsters can be quite tough and you will have a difficult time understanding the level system especially when your characters tend to mutate. You have to find the right mix in order to move on to the next level with ease. It leaves a lot to work on in the end.

RPGs only tend to be good to replay when they're good overall. This is one that would only be good to play once and be done with it. There are better RPGs to choose from especially obscure ones like Great Greed.

The game is quite decent but that's about it. I recommend playing through it to see what I'm talking about. You might lose interest like I did before finishing it but it's definitely an experience. Till next week!

Retro Gaming News: Final Fantasy II Rebalanced

"Final Fantasy II Rebalanced is a small and simple romhack made using Mr. Lenophis’ utility “Jade” (with some minor work done in WindHex). The primary aim of the project is to ease the player into the game by not cramming the “learn by doing” mechanic down their throat.
This is accomplished in quite a rudimentary fashion, by simply handing the player a basic skill set at the start of the game.
By the time the midgame is underway, the difficulty ramps up, but the endgame was streamlined as well, to make for an overall “smoother” feel to the difficulty curve.
Make no mistake: the game will still game over the player if they do something profoundly stupid, just not as early or as often. For those who enjoy the ability to “pick up and play,” Final Fantasy II Rebalanced offers not a declawed lion, but simply medical insurance for the lion tamer."
