Finds 2087: Gifts from a Chum, Yu-gi-oh! Madness!

Every once in a while, a completely unexpected gift finds its way into the collection, and this latest addition is a pretty awesome one! A co-worker of mine recently decided to pass along some Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game goodies, and naturally, I wasn't going to say no.

This is exactly the kind of surprise that makes collecting so much fun. You never quite know what someone might have tucked away!

A Double Dose of Legendary Duelists

The first big addition is a sealed box of Yu-Gi-Oh! Legendary Duelists: Synchro Storm. The green packaging immediately stands out, featuring Yugo and his WIND-based Synchro monsters.

The set is particularly fun for fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V eras, with plenty of Synchro-themed cards and familiar characters and strategies represented.

And then there's another sealed box of Yu-Gi-Oh! Brothers of Legend.

The colorful pink-and-purple box has a completely different look from Synchro Storm, featuring the adorable Kuriboh-like monsters on the artwork. Brothers of Legend is one of those sets that feels like a celebration of different corners of Yu-Gi-Oh!, bringing together cards and themes from across the franchise.

Having two sealed booster boxes arrive as a gift was definitely a pleasant surprise!

And Then There Are the Tins...

But the booster boxes aren't the only interesting pieces here.

Behind them are a couple of gold-and-black Egyptian-themed Yu-Gi-Oh! tins, and these might actually be my favorite part of the haul. The engraved-looking artwork and hieroglyphic-style decorations give them a fantastic ancient-Egyptian aesthetic that fits perfectly with Yu-Gi-Oh!'s original mythology.

Even if you aren't using them to store cards, these kinds of tins make great display pieces for a collection.

The Best Kind of Find

What makes this addition particularly cool isn't just the Yu-Gi-Oh! merchandise itself. It's the fact that these came from a co-worker who was kind enough to give them away.

There's something special about collecting items that come with a story. Instead of simply buying another couple of boxes online, these now have a little bit of personal history attached to them: a co-worker had some Yu-Gi-Oh! goodies and decided to pass them along.

Those unexpected gifts can sometimes become some of the most memorable pieces in a collection.

And, of course, there's always the temptation when you see sealed booster boxes sitting there...

Do I keep them sealed, or do I open them?

That's the eternal collector's dilemma. 😅

For now, I'm enjoying the sight of these colorful Yu-Gi-Oh! boxes sitting alongside those awesome Egyptian-themed tins. Whether they eventually get opened or remain sealed, they've already earned a spot in the collection.

A huge thank you to my co-worker for the awesome gift! It's definitely one heck of a Yu-Gi-Oh! haul, and another great addition to the ongoing Finds series.

Finds #2081: Double Dragon Advance and a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon

The latest additions to the Retro Gaming Life collection bring together two very different kinds of retro collectibles, but both are guaranteed to get the attention of collectors: a boxed copy of Double Dragon Advance for the Game Boy Advance and a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.

One takes us back to the days of portable 2D beat-'em-ups, while the other brings some serious trading-card nostalgia to the collection. Let's take a closer look at both!

Double Dragon Advance

First up is Double Dragon Advance for the Game Boy Advance.

Originally released in North America in November 2003, Double Dragon Advance was developed by Million and published by Atlus. Rather than being a simple port of the 1987 arcade classic, the game is essentially a remake that combines elements from the original arcade game with ideas, moves, enemies, weapons, and stages from other entries in the Double Dragon series.

That makes this a particularly interesting game for a collection.

The original Double Dragon helped establish the side-scrolling beat-'em-up as one of the defining arcade genres of the late 1980s. Double Dragon Advance takes that formula and squeezes it onto Nintendo's Game Boy Advance while adding plenty of new material.

Players can take control of Billy or Jimmy Lee and battle their way through the game, with multiplayer support available through the Game Link Cable. The game also includes a Survival Mode, giving players another way to put their fighting skills to the test.

A Love Letter to the Original

One of the coolest things about Double Dragon Advance is how much attention was given to the history of the series.

The game includes four new stages that were inserted between stages from the original arcade game. It also introduces additional enemies and moves inspired by other Double Dragon games and Technōs beat-'em-ups.

Even the box artwork has a fun connection to classic martial-arts cinema. The pose of Billy and Jimmy on the cover was designed as an homage to Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in The Way of the Dragon.

So while it may look like another Game Boy Advance release at first glance, Double Dragon Advance is actually a pretty substantial celebration of the franchise.

And finding a boxed copy like this makes it an even nicer addition to the collection.

Red-Eyes Black Dragon — Ghost Rare!

The other addition might be even more eye-catching: a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon!

Red-Eyes Black Dragon is one of the most recognizable monsters in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. Along with Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician, Red-Eyes has been one of the iconic monsters associated with the series since the early days of the trading card game.

This particular card is the Red-Eyes Black Dragon Ghost Rare from Ghosts From the Past: The 2nd Haunting, card GFP2-EN176. The set was released in 2022, and Red-Eyes was one of the classic monsters to receive the Ghost Rare treatment in the set.

And Ghost Rare is an especially cool rarity for collectors.

What Makes Ghost Rare Special?

Ghost Rare cards have a distinctive appearance that makes them stand out from virtually everything else in a Yu-Gi-Oh! collection.

The artwork has a silvery, almost ghost-like appearance and can look dramatically different depending on the angle and lighting. The card's name also has a pearlescent appearance. TCGplayer describes Ghost Rare as one of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s most prestigious collector rarities.

The rarity originally debuted in the 2007 Tactical Evolution set, and Ghost Rares quickly became some of the most desirable chase cards for collectors.

The Ghosts From the Past: The 2nd Haunting version of Red-Eyes is particularly fun because it takes such a classic monster and gives it an appearance that is completely different from the traditional Red-Eyes cards many fans remember from the early 2000s.

A Great Combination of Collectibles

I really like how these two additions represent different sides of retro gaming and collecting.

On one side, we have Double Dragon Advance, a physical Game Boy Advance game that connects directly to the arcade and 8-bit era of gaming. It takes a classic franchise and gives it a new life on a handheld system.

On the other side, we have Red-Eyes Black Dragon, representing the collectible-card side of the retro gaming and pop-culture world. For anyone who grew up with Yu-Gi-Oh!, seeing a Ghost Rare version of such an iconic monster is pretty special.

And there's something particularly satisfying about adding both a boxed Game Boy Advance game and a high-rarity Yu-Gi-Oh! card to the collection at the same time.

Another Fantastic Find!

Double Dragon Advance is already a great game to have in the collection, but finding a boxed copy makes this particular addition even better. Add in a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon, and this becomes one of those Finds that has a little bit of everything.

The Game Boy Advance represents an important part of Nintendo's handheld history, while Red-Eyes Black Dragon represents one of the most recognizable collectible card games of its generation.

Finds 1652: Peru Trip 2022 Haul! Amazing clones and games! Boxed Clones!!

Here is all the amazing loot I got from my trip to Peru. this time around, after seven years since my last trip, a lot has changed. You can’t find good loot that easy anymore or at least what I’m looking for to add to my collection but I did get lucky with a couple of things. Let’s take a look at t all this amazing loot!

SNES games are still around so here are some that I got. The ISS Deluxe is legit but beat up. The rest are bootlegs with the circuit boards which means they are higher quality.

Max Play is a clone which was really popular in Latin America, this console is also known as the Micro Genius in other regions. It’s a really awesome well built console.

Finds 1506: Flea Market Finds! Super Mario Galaxy 2, Magic the Gathering, and FIFA 98

I went back to the flea market after a year or so. Life has got me so busy that I can't really go to the flea market as much as I would love to go but it is what it is. I didn't find much but I was shocked to find what I did! I honestly didn't think I would find anything at all. The first thing I found was the Super Mario Galaxy 2 disc which was on a table that looked run down. It was five bucks so I was happy to pay for it. The second find was the FIFA 98 cart which is in Portuguese which is quite interesting. I will be talking about this FIFA 98 cart in a future post because there is something interesting about it. The last item was a Magic the Gathering Quick Start Set which I have no idea what it's worth or for but I picked it up because it's vintage and complete. I didn't even finished walking through the entire flea market but it was good times once again. Even better, I ran into my friend that goes to the flea market and we hunted like old times. Good times!

Finds 1468: Magic the Gathering Cards, and Others

Some new findings from thrifting. I always seem to find PC software and I'm always willing to pick it up. There is nothing crazy on here or is there? I got some Magic the Gathering cards but I have no idea if they are worth anything, I will keep them till I can find someone that can check the prices for me. Lets see what else I got. 

Here is the PC software I found. Some of them are going to my friend. I also found a PS1 game that's nothing crazy, but one I didn't have for my collection. I got the Naruto game for the 360 which is always a good addition as those fighting games are always a lot of fun!

Gundam action figure are always a good pick up. This is a really awesome figure and have added it to the collection. I love how these are and reminds me of my childhood.
