🕹️ What Is Splatterworld?

Originally developed for the Nintendo Famicom (NES) by Namco as a quirky spin-off to the horror franchise Splatterhouse, Splatterworld was planned for a 1993 release but quietly cancelled before it ever reached store shelves. The game blends horror tropes, off-beat humor, and turn-based RPG mechanics — a surprising twist for a series better known for side-scrolling action. 

For decades, Splatterworld existed only as fragmented tidbits in collectors’ archives and promotional material. It wasn’t until Halloween 2025 that a prototype ROM finally surfaced online, surprising the retro community and setting the stage for its resurrection.

Thanks to the talented fan translators at Aeon Genesis, Splatterworld now has a full English translation patch available — bringing the long-lost RPG to life for modern players. This patch lets you experience the game’s story, characters, and battles in English for the very first time. 

The translation was completed just about a month after the ROM’s discovery, a testament to the passion of retro gaming preservationists. 

Important Note: The patch carries a content warning — some historical figures appear as summonable spirits in the game, and these elements were kept intact in the interest of preservation and authenticity.

Retro Gaming News: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Spanish Translation!

"This is one of the most important games in the Zelda franchise, because of all the staples that it introduces to the franchise. For the first time, you’ve got Kakariko Village, interacting worlds/dimensions, Master Sword, friendly Zoras, sages, the hookshot, bottles, reviving fairies, arrow ammo system, and the spin attack. Elements of the first two games were also refined in this one, such as the heart container system and magic meter.

This game plays a lot like the original Zelda. You can use a subitem when you need to, just like in the original. You can use bombs and arrows. You can get a magic rod. A boomerang. A lot of the stuff is here. The magic meter from Zelda II is here, and you can also learn some magic spells, although the spell system is actually less expansive than in Zelda II. And then it introduces new elements and items, such as invincibility and the spin attack. For the first time ever, you can move in eight directions, which is wonderful. There’s very little to dislike here. Unfortunately, this is where the franchise starts to get a closed world and linearity, although it’s nowhere near as bad as Skyward Sword.

The graphics are bit strange. For example, Link has brown hair in all the artwork, yet he has pink hair in-game. Apparently the devs couldn’t fit brown into his color palette, although looking through it in a palette viewer suggests otherwise. Aside from that oversight, and Link’s ambidextrousness, you can tell what everything is.

The sound for this game is great. Sound effects are good and varied, although there’s usually an “echo” about them. The soundtrack for this game is very good; you’ll probably being humming the Hyrule and Death Mountain themes.

This game is the one that sets up all future games for the grand, multi-timeline epic that encompasses the Zelda franchise. The franchise bad guy gets his backstory hinted at for the first time ever, plot twists abound, and a supporting cast appears.

I recommend this game to anyone who likes adventure games. Actually, anyone would find something to like in this game. It may be the second-best Zelda game, next to Link’s Awakening and it contains a lot of that Zelda charm.

Retro Gaming News: Released! SFC Record of Lodoss War!

A new RPG for you and me to play - in English!
After a couple of years in the planning and production stages, a full English patch of SFC Record of Lodoss War is ready for RPG-lovers and fans of the Lodoss saga to enjoy!
Dynamic Designs chose this project with the simple objective of producing a complete translation. LNF Translations released a partial patch some years ago, one that converted most of the game’s dialogue to English but left much of the menu work and certain other features undone. Using the story in the LNF’s work as a guideline, Eien ni Hen translated the remaining Japanese, and we went to work. Unfortunately, some time after releasing the original LNF v0.90 English patch, project coordinator Lina` chan was tragically killed in an automobile accident, and the remaining members of LNF Translations never completed their patch.
Selection of this project came about as the result of a random conversation between Recca, Wildbill, and Red Soul - while that trio was working on Burning Heroes. As Wildbill recalls, Recca casually mentioned how nice it would be to have a complete translation of this game, Red Soul agreed, and Wildbill asked Bongo` how feasible it would be to just insert some English menus.
No one knew how to contact the remaining members of LNF translations, but Bongo` quickly deduced that the most efficient way to “finish” this game would be to design a dedicated insertion system with full assembly support and re-load a complete English translation from scratch. Using the critical dialogue translation work of LNF’s original patch as a take-off point, in 2013, the D-D team re-wrote the story and inserted it into this patch that we built from the ground up. Red Soul assumed lead coordination duties, and as always, the remainder of the D-D team contributed in their various areas of expertise.
However, without the original work of LNF Translations, completing this project would have required considerably more time. Accordingly, the spirit of LNF’s work is still woven into the fabric and tone of this saga. And a special thanks goes out to Eien ni Hen who fleshed out the numerous miscellaneous files’ translations that were missing in the LNF release.
We hope everyone involved in the original project realizes that our patch is as much LNF’s as D-Ds. We have paid proper homage to those players and their work in our translated and redesigned ending credits for this game. If anyone discovers that we left out (a) key player(s) who deserve(s) to be listed in the ending credits, report this information so we can modify our file and release an updated patch.
Here in D-D, Draken and Taskforce were instrumental in giving the script an important layer of QA, making sure it did not stray from ROLW ’s style and form. Due to their efforts, Red Soul reports that “many of his brain neurons were spared” from becoming frayed during this process! In the final stages of production, Wildbill, with his well known wit, lighthearted style, and penchant for easily digestible, savory writings, applied when appropriate his own lively twist to both characters and the general populace of Lodoss Island. Beta went rather smoothly thanks to the efforts of 4ph of Silva Saga-2 (French) fame and Wagner, a forum denizen who possesses an energetic disposition.
Final touches were applied by FlashPV (our friend who built the English title page for Burning Heroes and sent us redesigned English title pages for ROLW) and the ever-meticulous Bongo`. Using the combined graphics design work of Red Soul and FlashPV, Bongo` painstakingly reworked color palettes and layers intricacies until he could insert fully translated title pages into D-D’s patch for this game.

Retro Gaming News: One Man's Misfortune is Another's Gain

Have you ever heard of SGST (Some Good Shit Translations)? They were one of the early romhacking groups formed in the late nineties by various people such as EsperKnight, TheFreak, Tom, Higgs and Darien. Back in the day they announced several translations including Megami Tensei for the Famicom and have been working on it for over a decade. So this is not really a translation announcement for those who can recall The Scene history.
We are writing here today to tell you that all major hurdles regarding hacking were cleared some time ago and that a release was planned for the Christmas/New Years holiday season, but we missed that release window. So now we have a virtually complete translation, but you can’t play it. We’ve decided to wait until the game’s next anniversary as we feel a game of this magnitude deserves a special release to coincide with its historical significance.
Hacking and translation features include an expanded ROM for a massive and beautiful English script, expanded Demon names of 10 characters (as opposed to 8), expanded item names of 14 characters (this lets us fit Hinokagutsuchi) and 16+ characters for key items.
