🎮 SEGA SATURDAY 017: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (GENESIS)

🎮 SEGA SATURDAY #17 – SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (GENESIS)
by Retro Gaming Life

This week’s Sega Saturday is all about one of the most iconic games ever to grace the 16-bit era — Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis!

Released in 1992, this legendary sequel took everything fans loved about the original Sonic the Hedgehog and dialed it up to supersonic levels. From faster gameplay to larger, more colorful stages, Sonic 2 marked the true arrival of Sega’s blue mascot as a global superstar.

🌀 A Blast Processing Masterpiece

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced players to Tails (Miles Prower), Sonic’s loyal, two-tailed sidekick who could tag along in co-op mode or be controlled by the computer. The game also delivered a major technical leap, showcasing blazing speed, loop-de-loops, and split-second platforming precision that truly defined Sega’s “blast processing” marketing phrase.

With 11 diverse zones like Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, and Casino Night, each level delivered its own unique design, hazards, and unforgettable soundtrack. The vibrant visuals and smooth gameplay made Sonic 2 not only a fan favorite but a defining title for the Genesis library.

💎 The Birth of Super Sonic

For the first time ever, players could collect all seven Chaos Emeralds and transform Sonic into Super Sonic, turning the blue blur golden and granting him near invincibility and extreme speed. It became one of the most satisfying rewards in any 16-bit game — and set the stage for future Sonic transformations.

⚔️ Showdown with Dr. Robotnik

The game’s finale, featuring the epic Death Egg Zone, gave players one of the most memorable boss fights of the era. With no rings and only your reflexes to rely on, defeating Dr. Robotnik’s giant mech felt like the ultimate test of skill — and victory was incredibly rewarding.

🦔 Why Sonic 2 Still Matters

Even decades later, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains one of the most beloved platformers of all time. Its tight controls, catchy music, and perfectly tuned level design make it endlessly replayable. Whether you’re revisiting it on a real Genesis console or through modern re-releases, it’s a must-play classic that reminds us why Sega ruled the early ’90s.

💬 What’s your favorite Sonic 2 zone?

Sonic Mania Out Tomorrow! What to expect?

So with Sonic Mania being released tomorrow, we have a new adventure to look forward to. I already pre-ordered my copy of the collector's edition of course, although it won't arrive till the end of the week. Nevertheless, I'm excited to play a new old school Sonic adventure. The game has already been reviewed and has gotten scores of 8s for the most part which is really good as Sonic has had some problems in the last couple of entries....You know which ones! Nonetheless, the game is sure to bring some nostalgia back to retro gamers ourselves and introduce to the next generation of gamers some old school magic. In the end, everyone wins!

Sonic 2017 Game for the Nintendo NX!

A new trailer by Sega announced a couple of new Sonic games for the current generation consoles including PC. What is peculiar is that they also had the Nintendo NX logo in the trailer so perhaps this will be one of the launch titles the Nintendo NX will have which is quite awesome. We can only hope that the game will actually be good as Sonic games have taken a slump in recent years.
The trailer was no longer than two minutes and we were able to see some awesome moments as Sonic is joined up by the 1st gen Sonic! No sign of Sonic Boom phewwww~!
As I stated before, the game will be available on multiple platforms including the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo NX! It's definitely something to get excited about, Sorry Wiiu!

Sonic Mania Announced! Nostalgia Sonic Game!

A couple of new Sonic games were announced and I'm really happy about it. This one goes back to the classic formula that made Sonic games so great. You know, I'm glad I haven't seen a sight of Sonic Boom during these announcements! With 25 years of Sonic, they needed to go back to what made the games so great. I can't wait for this one to come out!
Here is a pic of the game. The Sonic character has a classic look but with improved graphics. The levels look familiar and fun. It'll definitely be a game to keep an eye on coming this Spring 2017.

Retro Gaming News: Lost Sonic Game Comes to Light, Still better than Sonic Boom!

Here are some interesting news that I didn't know know about. Apparently, a lost Sonic game that was released back in the early 90s has been found. It was used as a fund raiser and it's definitely interesting. Still a better game than Sonic Boom! That's saying a lot. Anyways, the game will be released in the next official MAME release so that everyone can get their hands on it.

The game is also said to be the first to have voices from the characters of the show. Isn't that something???

Here is the arcade machine itself! It was a police car!!! Totally awesome!

Retro Game of the Week 134: Sonic (SMS)

We are back again with another retro pick of the week. We have to make these a little more frequent you know, after all this is a weekly post. Anyways, this week we have Sonic for the Sega Master System. Why this version? Because it's definitely one to play. Of course, it's graphically inferior than the Genesis version we all know but it's quite rare to find the US version around these woods. The game overall is not bad until you compare it to its more powerful predecessor. Enough talk, it's a Sonic game after all so it can't be that bad right? OK, I take that back...

Sonic music in 8-bit sound is actually quite enjoyable but it's definitely not for everyone. The sound effects are also a bit bland. I'm getting to understand why Sega didn't released this game massively in the USA.

The graphics are quite good for a Master System game. Sonic looks like Sonic and not like a blob. The backgrounds and graphics of the stages are a hit. You never feel like you'll jump into a fake wall or something. There isn't that much distortion if there are too many things going on in the game so that's a well deserved thumbs up.

The gameplay is easy. Sonic games for the Genesis were just as easy as pick up and play. They are fast and fun. This one requires a little bit more strategy and jumping without having to go as fast as the speed of light. It's still fun in the end, it is classic Sonic after all.

Like many of the older Sonic games, this one is well worth a replay especially if you want to challenge yourself with your own goals like not taking a hit per level or collecting all the rings. Sonic games can be addictive too you know..

It's the first Sonic game and it's fun. What else is there more to say about this gem? It's just really enjoyable! I suggest you get the European version as it's the same thing and a lot cheaper!

Game-bit of the day 048: Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection (Xbox360)

With such a long title, it's gotta be good right? Well, yeah it is! Especially if it has over 40 Genesis hits. If you are a classic Sega Genesis fan, this is the collection for you! It has every Genesis hit ever ! You can't go wrong with this one!

Retro-bit of the day 298: Sonic 3D Blast (PC)

Here is another interesting PC game I came across. Sonic 3D Blast was a very interesting twist to the series which was never seen before. I don't know what else to tell ya except to get ready for some slow Sonic action.
