Finds 2081: Double Dragon Advance and Ghost Rare Red Eyes Black Dragon

Finds #2081: Double Dragon Advance and a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon

The latest additions to the Retro Gaming Life collection bring together two very different kinds of retro collectibles, but both are guaranteed to get the attention of collectors: a boxed copy of Double Dragon Advance for the Game Boy Advance and a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.

One takes us back to the days of portable 2D beat-'em-ups, while the other brings some serious trading-card nostalgia to the collection. Let's take a closer look at both!

Double Dragon Advance

First up is Double Dragon Advance for the Game Boy Advance.

Originally released in North America in November 2003, Double Dragon Advance was developed by Million and published by Atlus. Rather than being a simple port of the 1987 arcade classic, the game is essentially a remake that combines elements from the original arcade game with ideas, moves, enemies, weapons, and stages from other entries in the Double Dragon series.

That makes this a particularly interesting game for a collection.

The original Double Dragon helped establish the side-scrolling beat-'em-up as one of the defining arcade genres of the late 1980s. Double Dragon Advance takes that formula and squeezes it onto Nintendo's Game Boy Advance while adding plenty of new material.

Players can take control of Billy or Jimmy Lee and battle their way through the game, with multiplayer support available through the Game Link Cable. The game also includes a Survival Mode, giving players another way to put their fighting skills to the test.

A Love Letter to the Original

One of the coolest things about Double Dragon Advance is how much attention was given to the history of the series.

The game includes four new stages that were inserted between stages from the original arcade game. It also introduces additional enemies and moves inspired by other Double Dragon games and Technōs beat-'em-ups.

Even the box artwork has a fun connection to classic martial-arts cinema. The pose of Billy and Jimmy on the cover was designed as an homage to Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in The Way of the Dragon.

So while it may look like another Game Boy Advance release at first glance, Double Dragon Advance is actually a pretty substantial celebration of the franchise.

And finding a boxed copy like this makes it an even nicer addition to the collection.

Red-Eyes Black Dragon — Ghost Rare!

The other addition might be even more eye-catching: a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon!

Red-Eyes Black Dragon is one of the most recognizable monsters in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. Along with Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician, Red-Eyes has been one of the iconic monsters associated with the series since the early days of the trading card game.

This particular card is the Red-Eyes Black Dragon Ghost Rare from Ghosts From the Past: The 2nd Haunting, card GFP2-EN176. The set was released in 2022, and Red-Eyes was one of the classic monsters to receive the Ghost Rare treatment in the set.

And Ghost Rare is an especially cool rarity for collectors.

What Makes Ghost Rare Special?

Ghost Rare cards have a distinctive appearance that makes them stand out from virtually everything else in a Yu-Gi-Oh! collection.

The artwork has a silvery, almost ghost-like appearance and can look dramatically different depending on the angle and lighting. The card's name also has a pearlescent appearance. TCGplayer describes Ghost Rare as one of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s most prestigious collector rarities.

The rarity originally debuted in the 2007 Tactical Evolution set, and Ghost Rares quickly became some of the most desirable chase cards for collectors.

The Ghosts From the Past: The 2nd Haunting version of Red-Eyes is particularly fun because it takes such a classic monster and gives it an appearance that is completely different from the traditional Red-Eyes cards many fans remember from the early 2000s.

A Great Combination of Collectibles

I really like how these two additions represent different sides of retro gaming and collecting.

On one side, we have Double Dragon Advance, a physical Game Boy Advance game that connects directly to the arcade and 8-bit era of gaming. It takes a classic franchise and gives it a new life on a handheld system.

On the other side, we have Red-Eyes Black Dragon, representing the collectible-card side of the retro gaming and pop-culture world. For anyone who grew up with Yu-Gi-Oh!, seeing a Ghost Rare version of such an iconic monster is pretty special.

And there's something particularly satisfying about adding both a boxed Game Boy Advance game and a high-rarity Yu-Gi-Oh! card to the collection at the same time.

Another Fantastic Find!

Double Dragon Advance is already a great game to have in the collection, but finding a boxed copy makes this particular addition even better. Add in a Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon, and this becomes one of those Finds that has a little bit of everything.

The Game Boy Advance represents an important part of Nintendo's handheld history, while Red-Eyes Black Dragon represents one of the most recognizable collectible card games of its generation.

Two different collectibles, two different forms of nostalgia, and two more great additions to Retro Gaming Life!

Which one would you choose for your collection: the boxed Double Dragon Advance or the Ghost Rare Red-Eyes Black Dragon? Let me know in the comments!

And as always, stay tuned for the next Finds post, because there are always more games, collectibles, and retro treasures waiting to join the collection!

Keep gaming and keep collecting!

Ads From the Past 558: Mega Man Mania

Ads From the Past: "Celebrate 15 Years of Mega Man Mania!" – The Bittersweet Ad for Capcom's Canceled GBA Collection

Welcome back to Ads From the Past, the Retro Gaming Life series spotlighting those magazine promos that promised gaming glory—sometimes delivered, sometimes not. Today, we're unpacking a poignant 2003 Capcom ad for the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on Game Boy Advance (aka Mega Man Mania), a 15th anniversary tribute that hyped five portable classics... only to vanish into vaporware legend.

The Ad Breakdown: Nostalgic Screens and Handheld Hype

This full-page stunner bursts with blue-and-yellow anniversary flair. At the top, "Celebrate 15 Years of Mega Man Mania!" arches over a triptych of Game Boy screenshots: icy platforms, robot-filled grids, a serpentine boss (likely from Mega Man V), pyramid ruins, and explosive action—teasing the GB series' pixel-perfect challenges in vibrant color.

Center stage: Dynamic artwork of Mega Man blasting an orange energy ring at a shadowy foe (Bass?), with Bass returning fire from the left. The copy urges: "Jump into the celebration with Mega Man's finest adventures: Control him every step of the ways as he blasts, jumps, ducks and runs outsmarting his enemies at every turn. Learn about Mega Man's history and unlock original art in this special collection. With 5 infectious games on one Game Boy Advance cartridge, you've got a case of Mega Mania!"

Bottom: The mockup GBA box for Mega Man Anniversary Collection, flanked by smaller carts (possibly Mega Man & Bass GBA port). ESRB "Mild Cartoon Violence," Nintendo Seal, and Capcom's 2003 copyright. Ran in mags like Nintendo Power Vol. 181, touting "Coming Fall ’04" and "5 Games in 1!"—pure portable nostalgia bait.

Check out this promo box art that matches the ad perfectly:

Game Context: Five GB Classics, Forever Lost (Officially)

Tied to Mega Man's 1987 debut, this GBA collection was a handheld companion to the console Anniversary Collection (PS2/GC/Xbox: NES Mega Man 1-8 + arcade). It promised colorized remakes of the five GB originals—ports upgraded from PS1's Rockman Complete Works style—with B&W toggle, art gallery, and series history.

Included Games:

GameJapan TitleKey Features Teased
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's RevengeRockman WorldOriginal GB debut, Wily's Revenge
Mega Man IIRockman World 2Rush debut, slide mechanic
Mega Man IIIRockman World 3Doc Robots, time-travel twists
Mega Man IVRockman World 4Charge Buster, Beat bird
Mega Man VRockman World 5Mega Man Killers like Ballade

Planned for Fall 2004 (delayed from 2003), it got ads, box art, and even screenshots—but Capcom axed it. Official reason: "lost the game code." Rumors: unprofitable, DS shift. No public prototypes until 2018 leaks and a 2024 fan recreation by modders.

Why This Ad Stands Out

In 2003's anniversary blitz (Mega Man & Bass GBA, Battle Network TV spots), this ad dangled the ultimate portable fix: rare GB titles (hard to find legally) in color on GBA. Its "Mega Mania" tag evoked infectious fun, but the cancellation stung—echoing Capcom's rocky early-2000s era. Today, it's a holy grail symbol, with fan patches bringing it back.

Final Thoughts

Dust off original GB carts on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, or grab the fan-made GBA ROM for colorized glory. Seen this ad in old Nintendo Power? Vaporware regrets? Share below! More Ads From the Past unlocking soon.

Finds 2032: Super Mario Advance 4 & Classic Cobra Troopers

New Additions to the Collection: Super Mario Advance 4 & Classic Cobra Troopers

There’s nothing quite like adding a mix of gaming history and nostalgic figures to the collection, and this latest pickup hits that sweet spot perfectly. From portable Mario greatness to iconic action figures straight out of the ’80s and ’90s, these new additions bring together two worlds that defined childhood for many of us.

🟡 Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (Game Boy Advance)

First up is Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Game Boy Advance, complete and looking fantastic on the shelf. This release is widely regarded as one of the definitive versions of Super Mario Bros. 3, taking the NES classic and enhancing it with brighter visuals, refined sound, and the portability that made the GBA era so special.

What truly sets this version apart is the e-Reader functionality, which allowed players to unlock exclusive levels and power-ups—content that remained hidden gems for years. Even without the extra cards, the core experience is still pure Mario perfection: tight controls, iconic worlds, and some of the best level design Nintendo has ever produced.

Having this one boxed is always a win, especially for collectors who appreciate Nintendo’s early-2000s handheld era.

🐍 Cobra Troopers Join the Display

Flanking Mario in this display are two unmistakable figures from G.I. Joe’s Cobra faction, instantly recognizable to fans of classic action figures and Saturday morning cartoons. These Cobra troopers add a strong dose of retro attitude to the collection and pair surprisingly well with the gaming display.

Cobra figures have always stood out thanks to their distinctive uniforms, masked designs, and undeniable villain energy. Whether you grew up staging epic battles on the living room floor or just admired their bold designs, these figures are timeless pieces of pop culture history.

🎮 A Perfect Blend of Retro Passions

What makes this pickup especially fun is how it blends retro gaming and classic toys into one cohesive display. Super Mario Advance 4 represents peak Nintendo platforming, while the Cobra troopers tap into the action-figure boom that defined another side of retro fandom.

Together, they capture what collecting is really about: preserving the things that made gaming and pop culture exciting in the first place.

More additions are always on the way, so stay tuned—Retro Gaming Life is just getting started.

Finds 1824: Free Gifts from a Friend! Doki Doki Panic !!!

Here is a lot of free stuff I got from a friend. She knew I love Famicom bootlegs and asked if I wanted them so I couldn't say no! This is just amazing and I'm always so thankful for gifts like these. The best part is that it came with a Doki Doki Panic cart which for some reason comes inside another game. Not sure if it's a repro or just a replacement shell as I'm too much of a wuss to open it up. It's really cool though. Thank you again my friend!

Finds 1710: Bootlegs and more Bootlegs!

Bootlegs from a friend, this is a very nice set of bootleg stuff and it's just too much to mention in one photo so please check it out yourself. The most interesting stuff from this lot is the Dreamcast bootleg games as they were made in a factory as they aren't burnt. Now that's interesting because I've encountered Playstation 1 games like that. Gotta love bootlegs!

Finds 1681: Wario Land Shake it, Red GBA SP, Sealed Wii Remote, and More!

Now that I’m back home, it’s time for some classic looting! I was able to get these through Offer Up and thrifting. I always love finding portable goodies because they are some of my favorites to game on. Bomberman, Super Mario Land 2, and others are just a couple of awesome additions and re-additions to the collection. I usually pick up doubles with the idea of flipping them for other games that I don’t have. I think it’s a good way to keep a budget and still increase your collection. Overall, not a bad haul.

Finds 1643: Sukoku, Portable Goodies, and a Mystery Game!

Some awesome goodies I was able to find at the thrift store. I definitely love getting Power Quest as it's one of the most memorable Gameboy Color games I've played years ago and it just sticks to my mind. It's not the best game, but it's really fun. I also got Zelda for the Gameboy color although this cart doesn't work, I will find a way to make it run. Some other goodies as well as Super Mario Odyssey which is a game I wanted for a while. Finally, a mystery game! What game is it? Check below!

It's Pokemon Trading Card game for the gameboy color, not bad!

Finds 1590: Super Mario Bros Classic, Solitaire Mahjong, School Girl Zombie Hunter, Jaz 2GB Disk, PC Software and Turtles!

I found a new reseller locally and was happy to make a deal with him. I got Super Mario Bros Classic for GBA, School Girl Zombie Hunter for PS4, and the best 1000 Windows games for PC from them and was really happy with the transaction. I also went to a new thrift store and found some PC stuff as well as a Wii game that caught my attention mainly because I'm a fan of Solitaire. I also got two turtles from another thrift store for fifty cents each. I think I have them but couldn't say no to 50 cents turtles! Finally, the most interesting finding of this trip was the Jaz Disk which holds 2GBs! I never heard of this thing. I need to find the drive for it to see if there are any awesome goodies inside. For now, it'll make a show piece.

Finds 1589: NIS Classics Volume 1, Akira Blueray, Dreams, and Portable Games

Got some really cool stuff recently. The Akira was a must as I have yet to get a physical version of the movie. I also got some portable games such as Dragon Ball Z, Kirby, Tekken, and Professor Layton. They are all quality titles that I didn't spent much for which is always a big plus during a hunt. Finally, went to Gamestop and saw that they had the NIS Classics Volume 1 for a big discount. Add that with my five dollars off coupon and I left the store really happy. It was a good day.

This is one of the most amazing lots I've gotten in a while. I know it looks like a lot of the lots I have gotten in the past but the prices I paid for these games are unheard of nowadays. Buying in bundle definitely pays off. So as you can see, there is a lot of beautiful stuff to look at. That's not all though, I have more stuff in the photo below of stuff that didn't fit this first photo. Lets go through it!

The portable Final Fantasy games are totally worth it. I only had part three but I got the rest of the set now. Phantasy Star IV is always a game I wanted to get. The SNES games are all pure win! Just beautiful stuff. The little extras are there too!

I was finally able to get the Chocobo Dungeon games for the original Playstation as well as the Chocobo Racing game which I had no idea it existed! Uff!

Some Playstation games. The main score was the one in the middle, you know that shoot 'em up by Working Designs, I love it all!

This is what didn't fit in the first photo. We have a double of Sega games, Chocobo Dungeon for Wii, and more boxes Final Fantasy games! An amazing addition to my collection!
