Finds #2079: Pikachu, Floppy Disks, and a Great Stack of Games!
There’s something I really enjoy about adding a little bit of everything to the collection. Sometimes a new collection haul is all about one particular console or genre, and other times you come across a group of items that couldn’t be more different from one another. That’s exactly what happened with this latest batch of finds!
This time around, we have some adorable Pokémon merchandise, a handful of classic Sony floppy disks, and a fantastic selection of PlayStation games spanning the PS4 and PS5 generations.
Pikachu Gets a Winter Makeover!
Let’s start with the star of the photo: this absolutely adorable Pikachu plush!
Pikachu is already one of the most recognizable characters in gaming, but this particular version comes ready for the cold weather. The blue winter hat, complete with Pikachu ears sticking through the sides and a fluffy pom-pom on top, gives this plush a wonderfully seasonal look.
The snowflake designs on the hat are a great little detail, too. It’s definitely the kind of collectible that adds some personality to the gaming room rather than simply sitting on a shelf alongside games.
And honestly, Pikachu looks pretty happy about being surrounded by all these new additions!
A Little Piece of Computer History
Behind the games are several boxes of Sony floppy disks.
For anyone who grew up with modern storage, it can be easy to forget just how important floppy disks once were. Before CDs, DVDs, USB drives, and cloud storage became commonplace, floppy disks were one of the standard ways to save and transfer computer files and software.
These Sony-branded disks are especially fun for a collection because they represent an entirely different era of technology. The familiar blue packaging and classic floppy disk format immediately bring back memories of older PCs and the days when storage space was measured in much smaller numbers than we're used to today.
They may not be video games themselves, but they fit perfectly with a collection that celebrates the history of gaming and computing.
Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance
Moving into the games, we have Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance.
Released in 2023, Quest for Balance lets players revisit the world of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. Players can control characters including Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph while traveling through the four nations and using the various bending abilities. The game also features two-player cooperative play.
For an Avatar fan, having a physical copy in the collection is a nice addition, particularly alongside the many other anime-inspired and Japanese-style games in this haul.
Nioh 2
Next up is Nioh 2 for PS4.
This is one of those games that fits right at home in a collection of action RPGs. Developed by Team Ninja, Nioh 2 takes players into a supernatural version of Sengoku-era Japan, where samurai warriors and Yokai creatures are equally dangerous.
The game originally launched for PS4 on March 13, 2020, and eventually received a PS5 version as part of Nioh 2 Remastered.
If you enjoy challenging combat, character customization, Japanese history, and plenty of monsters trying to kill you, Nioh 2 has plenty to offer.
Dark Rose Valkyrie
Another interesting addition is Dark Rose Valkyrie for PS4.
Released in North America in 2017 by Idea Factory International, this is a Japanese-style RPG developed by Compile Heart. The game combines traditional RPG combat with a rather unusual mystery element: members of the Valkyrie Force can potentially be infected, meaning players have to investigate and interrogate their teammates to figure out who has been compromised.
That combination of RPG mechanics, anime-style presentation, and visual-novel-inspired investigation makes Dark Rose Valkyrie a particularly interesting physical addition.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
The PS5 collection also gets some love with Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.
Released in 2024, Eiyuden Chronicle is a traditional-style JRPG created by members of the team behind the Suikoden series. The game features a huge cast of characters and a classic fantasy story involving war, political conflict, friendship, and the struggle for power.
The PlayStation version supports both PS4 and PS5, with the PS5 version releasing alongside the game on April 23, 2024.
For fans of old-school JRPGs, this is definitely one worth having in a physical collection.
And There’s Even More!
There are a couple of other interesting games included in this haul, including a Japanese anime-themed release and another PS5 title with a strong mecha/action aesthetic. The variety is one of the things I like most about this particular group of finds.
You have modern PS5 releases sitting alongside PS4 RPGs, an Avatar game, Japanese gaming material, computer-history memorabilia, and, of course, a giant Pikachu wearing a winter hat!
That’s quite a collection of different gaming eras represented in one photo.
Another Great Find for the Collection
This was definitely a fun batch of additions to the Retro Gaming Life collection. From the nostalgia of the Sony floppy disks to the modern PS5 releases, there’s a little something here for just about every kind of gamer.
And while the games are obviously the main attraction, I think the Pikachu plush might have stolen the show this time around. It’s hard to compete with a giant Pikachu wearing a winter hat!
As always, every new addition helps make the collection a little more interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the next Finds brings.
