Thrift stores are amazing places. You never quite know what you're going to find sitting on a shelf, tucked away in a box, or hiding behind something completely ordinary. Sometimes you find a great vintage game, an old piece of electronics, or a collectible you never expected to see again. And then there are the things that make you stop and say, “Wait… why are they selling this here?”
Welcome to a new series on Retro Gaming Life: “Things That You Find at Thrift Stores.”
For this series, I'll be highlighting some of the strangest, funniest, most unexpected, and downright bizarre items I've spotted for sale at thrift stores. They don't necessarily have to be valuable or collectible—sometimes the weirdness of the item is the whole point.
And for the first entry, we're starting with something I definitely wasn't expecting to see on a thrift store shelf:
Tampax Tampons for $2.99
Yep. That's right.
While browsing through the thrift store, I came across a box of Tampax tampons sitting among the other merchandise. The box contains 20 regular absorbency tampons and was marked with a $2.99 price tag.
The package itself immediately caught my attention. It's not something you normally expect to encounter at a thrift store, especially alongside vintage electronics, household goods, books, and other secondhand merchandise.
The box even features the familiar Tampax branding along with the LeakGuard Skirt and other product information. From the appearance of the packaging, it looks like an older package design, making it somewhat interesting from a packaging-history perspective.
But the real question is:
Who donates tampons to a thrift store?
Thrift stores receive donations of all kinds, so I'm sure the people sorting donations have seen just about everything. Still, personal hygiene products are one of those categories that makes you do a double take when you see them sitting on a secondhand store shelf.
And there's something particularly funny about the idea of someone walking through a thrift store, spotting this box, and thinking:
“Yep. That's exactly what I came here for.”
Of course, there's also the practical side of it. With something like personal hygiene products, shoppers are understandably going to be concerned about packaging condition, age, and whether the item has been properly stored. Even if a package appears sealed, it's certainly not the kind of thrift-store find everyone is going to feel comfortable purchasing.
The $2.99 Question
The price tag on this particular box reads $2.99.
Whether that's a bargain compared with buying a new package at a supermarket or pharmacy is debatable, but that's almost beside the point. The amusing part is simply that this was an item someone decided belonged in a thrift store.
That's what makes thrift-store hunting so much fun.
You can walk in looking for one thing and walk out having discovered something you never even knew existed in the world of secondhand shopping.
Why This Series?
I've seen plenty of strange things while browsing thrift stores over the years, and I thought it would be fun to start documenting them.
Not everything needs to be a valuable collectible or a rare piece of gaming history. Sometimes the best finds are the ones that make you laugh, scratch your head, or immediately reach for your camera.
“Things That You Find at Thrift Stores” is going to be all about those discoveries.
Some will be vintage. Some will be unusual. Some might actually be valuable. And others—like this box of Tampax—will simply leave us wondering how they ended up there in the first place.
So, congratulations to this box of Tampax. You are officially the first entry in Things That You Find at Thrift Stores!
