⚔️ Dragoon X Omega II
Fans of old-school RPGs will definitely want to check out Dragoon X Omega II.
Originally released as a major NES ROM hack, Dragoon X Omega II uses the Final Fantasy engine as the foundation for an entirely new RPG experience. The project was principally credited to Sliver X and Thaddeus and serves as a sequel to the original Dragoon X Omega, which was based on Dragon Warrior. Unlike a simple modification, the sequel substantially rebuilds the game to create its own world, story, equipment, enemies, and gameplay experience.
If you're looking for an NES RPG that feels like a lost game from another universe, this is a fascinating addition to the collection.
🤖 Mega Man Redux
Mega Man Redux gives the original Mega Man on NES a dramatic visual makeover.
Created by Amaweks, this hack redesigns much of the game's pixel art, sprites, backgrounds, and color palettes. Instead of the more simplistic visual presentation of the original, Redux gives Mega Man a more detailed, shaded appearance while adding graphical details throughout the stages.
It's a great choice for Mega Man fans who want to experience the classic game with a completely refreshed visual style.
🏰 Final Fantasy ++
RPG fans get another treat with Final Fantasy ++, a substantial hack of the original NES Final Fantasy.
The project was created by Grond and modifies the classic adventure with changes designed to provide a fresh experience while still using the original Final Fantasy as its foundation. A separate World of Chaos expansion was also created for the project, demonstrating just how extensive this fan-made Final Fantasy universe became.
If you're a fan of the original NES Final Fantasy and enjoy discovering alternate versions of classic RPGs, Final Fantasy ++ is definitely worth adding to your collection.
🧛 Castlevania: Red Stained
For something darker, we have Castlevania: Red Stained.
This fascinating hack transforms the original Castlevania into something resembling a classic black-and-white horror movie, with carefully selected red elements providing dramatic highlights throughout the adventure.
But the changes aren't merely cosmetic. Red Stained also introduces new traps, additional enemies and paths, graphical corrections, redesigned areas, increased difficulty, and other gameplay changes. Version 2.0 further expanded the experience with additional enemies, new paths and traps, stronger enemies, and numerous graphical improvements.
The result is a stylish and challenging new take on one of the NES's most iconic horror games.
🍄 Super Mario Bros X86 Island
And finally, we have one of the strangest—and most entertaining—games in this collection: Super Mario Bros X86 Island!
This isn't actually a hack of Super Mario Bros. Instead, it's a hack of Adventure Island that replaces the original game's hero with Mario and mixes elements from the Mushroom Kingdom with Adventure Island's gameplay.
The hack features completely changed levels, a new storyline, faster gameplay, redesigned Mario graphics, and a mixture of familiar Mario enemies with characters from the Adventure Island universe. It was released in 2023 by DjKranoll.
It's the kind of wonderfully unusual crossover that makes exploring the NES ROM-hacking scene so much fun!
