A Mother, a Newborn, and Mortal Kombat: The Tournament That Became Legendary

In a world where high-stakes competitive gaming and new parenthood rarely cross paths, one woman proved they can. A Florida gamer known online as Legi0n recently made headlines after winning a local Mortal Kombat XL tournament just five days after giving birth — all while holding her newborn daughter in her arms. The story immediately resonated through the fighting game community (FGC) and beyond, embodying raw passion, resilience, and the idea that life doesn’t have to force you to give up what you love.

Setting the Scene: Juicy Game Night in Orlando

The tournament took place at a local gaming meetup in Orlando, Florida, aptly called Juicy Game Night, where the local scene gathered for some classic 1-on-1 mayhem. Despite having undergone a C-section just days prior (on September 22), Legi0n decided to attend. She navigated recovery pains, fatigue, and the emotional weight of her recent medical complications — yet she still showed up, baby in tow.

On that night, her daughter Cereza stayed peacefully in her arms as Legi0n climbed through a four-person bracket. In one memorable twist, she even defeated her husband in one of the rounds. Finally, in a heated Grand Final matchup against a player called King Kai, Legi0n sealed the win in a 3–2 set. Her prize? A modest $28 — but the symbolic victory was far greater. Along with the prize, she also earned a spot in DreamHack Atlanta later this year.

Why This Story Matters to Retro & Fighting Game Fans

1. The Spirit of “Play No Matter What”

Retro and fighting game communities often celebrate grit, dedication, and loyalty to the classics. Legi0n’s commitment to entering a tourney mere days after childbirth is the kind of unbreakable spirit that makes these communities tick. It’s a reminder: passion isn’t just for the young or unencumbered. Even at life’s most demanding moments, the joystick still calls.

2. Representation & Breaking Stereotypes

The FGC (and the broader gaming world) sometimes leans heavily male in representation, especially in competitive settings. A woman entering a tournament — let alone winning one while caring for a newborn — challenges ingrained assumptions about who “belongs” on the stage. It’s an inspiring symbol for parent-gamers, especially mothers, that their responsibilities need not bar them from competing.

3. Community and Support

Legi0n is no stranger to adversity. She previously shared publicly about pregnancy complications and the heartbreaking loss of her first daughter, Alcina, due to a rare medical condition. That kind of trauma often leads many to retreat — but instead, she has leaned into community support, speaking about how friends and the gaming scene rallied behind her. Her story underscores how much the fighting game scene (and gaming communities in general) can be more than just players and matches — they can be family, lifelines, and sources of sustenance.

4. It’s About More Than the Money

Don’t let the $28 prize fool you — it’s hardly about the cash. The real win is the narrative. That tiny payout, combined with the DreamHack slot, becomes much richer in context: it represents recognition, opportunity, and the symbolic victory of persistence. In many grassroots tournaments, especially in retro or local scenes, the emotional and social stakes often outstrip the monetary ones. This is one of those moments where the story eclipses the scoreboard.

Looking Ahead: What It Could Mean for the Scene

  • More Visibility for Parent-Gamers
Stories like this can encourage tournaments and organizers to offer more inclusivity: better accommodations, flexible rules, or even on-site childcare in big events.

  • Inspiration for Others Facing Challenges
Maybe someone recovering from illness, dealing with family issues, or balancing work and life reads about Legi0n and thinks, “Maybe I can still enter that tourney, even if I’m not 100%.”

  • Reframing What “Competitor” Looks Like
The image of a champion is often a young person with hours to train, no external burdens. Legi0n’s win adds needed nuance: you can be a competitor while also being a caretaker, a parent, a person with responsibilities.

Final Thoughts

At its heart, this isn’t just a feel-good news item — it’s a clarion call to the gaming world: life happens, but you don’t always have to step away. Sometimes, you bring your whole life into the arena — infant, fatigue, pain, hope — and still find a way to win.

For retro and fighting game fans, this moment joins the lore. Decades from now, maybe someone will bring this up when talking about the iconic moments in grassroots FGC history. And let me be the first to say: that’ll be a damn good story to tell.

Japan’s 100-Year-Old Gamer Proves That Gaming Has No Age Limit

In a heartwarming story that’s inspiring gamers worldwide, a Japanese grandmother has reached the incredible milestone of 100 years old—and she’s still playing video games. Far from slowing down, she continues to embrace gaming as a source of joy, mental stimulation, and connection with others, proving that age is truly just a number when it comes to doing what you love.

A Century of Life, A Lifetime of Gaming

Born in 1925, this remarkable woman has lived through some of the most transformative moments in modern history—from the rise of television to the internet era. Yet what makes her story particularly unique is her deep love for video games. While gaming is often seen as a pastime for younger generations, she has shown that it can be enjoyed by anyone, at any stage of life.

From Hobby to Lifestyle

Gaming became more than just entertainment for her; it turned into a way to keep her mind sharp and her hands active. Titles that require strategy, puzzle-solving, or quick reflexes have helped her stay engaged and mentally agile well into her golden years.

Her dedication mirrors that of other well-known elderly gamers, like Hamako Mori, nicknamed the “Gaming Grandma,” who became famous worldwide for her gaming livestreams at age 90. Stories like these remind us that video games aren’t just a fleeting trend—they are a form of interactive art and activity that people of all ages can enjoy.

Breaking Stereotypes About Gaming

The story of Japan’s oldest gamer challenges the long-held stereotype that gaming is just for kids or young adults. Instead, it highlights the reality that gaming has become a lifelong hobby for millions. It also underlines how games can promote mental health, hand-eye coordination, and even social connections, particularly for seniors who might otherwise feel isolated.

An Inspiration for the Future of Gaming

As the gaming industry continues to grow and evolve, stories like this show us what the future could look like: generations of people carrying their love for gaming with them throughout their lives. With more accessible consoles, mobile platforms, and inclusive game designs, it’s no surprise that seniors are picking up controllers alongside their grandchildren.

This centenarian gamer is not only enjoying her favorite pastime—she’s setting an example for us all. She shows that passion doesn’t fade with age, and in fact, it may be the very thing that keeps us feeling young.

🎮 Here’s to 100 years of life and the joy of gaming—an achievement that deserves to be celebrated just as much as any high score.

Hellspire – A Brutal, Retro-Inspired Tower Climb

Indie developer Crabbe has unleashed something punishing, stylish, and addictively tense with Hellspire, available now on itch.io. Inspired by the difficulty-driven platformers of the late 80s and early 90s, the game challenges players to ascend a deadly tower where every mistake has consequences.

The Premise

The concept is simple yet unforgiving: climb the Hellspire. Armed only with your reflexes and precision, you must leap across perilous gaps, avoid spikes, and survive increasingly dangerous traps. Much like classics such as Ghosts ’n Goblins or modern masocore hits like Jump King, Hellspire is built around the thrill of risk and the agony of failure. Fall too far, and you’ll lose progress, forcing you to master every jump and obstacle.

Visuals and Atmosphere

The pixel art style perfectly captures the feel of a grim, infernal tower while still feeling fresh and sharp. There’s a heavy use of deep reds, dark shadows, and menacing set pieces that emphasize the oppressive climb. Combined with its moody chiptune-inspired soundtrack, the game immerses you in a hellish ascent that feels equal parts nostalgic and modern.

Gameplay Experience

At its core, Hellspire is a test of patience and precision. The controls are tight and responsive, meaning every success feels earned — and every failure is on you. Unlike games that hold your hand, Hellspire demands dedication. Each new section ramps up the challenge, introducing trickier platforming sequences that require exact timing.

For players who love the thrill of repetition and improvement, this is where Hellspire shines. It rewards persistence, transforming frustration into the satisfaction of finally clearing that one brutal jump.

Why It Stands Out

The indie scene is packed with difficult platformers, but Hellspire carves its niche by combining old-school charm with modern polish. It’s a love letter to the era of tough-but-fair gaming, yet it avoids feeling dated thanks to clever design and stylish presentation.

It’s not a game for everyone — casual players may find the relentless punishment overwhelming — but for those who crave challenge, Hellspire offers a rewarding climb that will keep you coming back.

Final Thoughts

Hellspire is a brutal, beautifully crafted platformer that embraces the spirit of retro gaming while providing a fresh test for modern players. If you enjoy precision platforming, a steep challenge, and the satisfaction of conquering the impossible, this game deserves a spot on your radar.

You can try it now over on itch.io.

Finds 1983: Super Mario Bros Keychain 1988

A Nostalgic Treasure: 1988 Super Mario Bros. Keychain Find

If you’re a fan of retro gaming collectibles, then this gem is sure to bring back some fond memories! I recently came across this vintage Super Mario Bros. keychain from 1988, and it’s an absolute blast from the past.

A Piece of Nintendo History

This keychain features Mario in his classic red overalls and iconic cap, holding a smiling Starman (or Super Star), a power-up that grants temporary invincibility in the game. The design is bold, colorful, and perfectly captures the whimsical charm of the early Mario era.

1988 was a golden year for Nintendo. The NES was dominating living rooms, Super Mario Bros. 3 was on the horizon, and Mario had already cemented his place as a pop culture icon. This keychain was part of a wave of merchandise that let fans carry a little piece of the Mushroom Kingdom wherever they went.

Why Collectors Love It

  • Authenticity: Original 1980s Mario merchandise is highly sought after by collectors.

  • Condition Matters: Many of these keychains have yellowed or cracked over time, so finding one in good condition is a treat.

  • Design: The classic hand-drawn Mario artwork is very different from the sleek, modern design we see today, making it even more nostalgic.

Where I Found It

I stumbled upon this beauty while browsing through a local retro game shop. Surrounded by SNES cartridges, old manuals, and other gaming memorabilia, it stood out immediately. Holding it in my hand felt like holding a piece of gaming history.

Tips for Collectors

  • Check for authenticity: Look for official Nintendo licensing marks.

  • Preserve it: Keep it away from direct sunlight and moisture to avoid fading and rusting.

  • Pair it: These keychains look fantastic displayed with other vintage Mario merchandise or retro consoles.

Do you have any vintage Mario collectibles in your collection? Share them in the comments—I’d love to see them!

Finds 1982: Samsung GX CRT TV! The Gaming TV from 1998!

A Look at the Samsung GX TV: Retro Gaming with a Twist

One of the coolest parts of retro collecting isn’t just the games themselves—it’s the hardware that defined the experience. And sometimes, you come across a piece of tech that feels almost forgotten, yet incredibly unique. That’s exactly the case with this Samsung GX TV, a quirky and stylish television that fits perfectly into a retro gaming setup.

The GX TV’s Unique Design

At first glance, the Samsung GX TV looks like something straight out of a futuristic ’90s bedroom setup. Its most striking feature is the dual front “wings” that open up to reveal powerful built-in stereo speakers. When closed, the unit has a sleek, compact design; when opened, it transforms into something that feels more like a multimedia station than a simple TV.

It’s a design that definitely made it stand out from the sea of standard CRTs of its era. The emphasis on sound with those large folding speakers shows it wasn’t just about the picture—it was about the experience.

Perfect for Gaming

Hooking up retro consoles to this TV feels just right. The curved CRT screen delivers that authentic scanline look, while the powerful front-facing speakers give games a fuller, arcade-like presence. As seen here running a classic beat-’em-up, the GX TV handles the action beautifully, with that nostalgic glow only CRTs can provide.

What makes it even better is its size—compact enough to fit comfortably into a modern game room, but still large enough to make playing on it feel immersive. Paired with systems like the Nintendo 64, NES, or even arcade-style setups, it’s the kind of TV that makes you want to fire up a stack of cartridges and lose track of time.

A Collectible in Its Own Right

The Samsung GX TV wasn’t just another television—it was a statement piece. Released in the late ’90s, it stood out in electronics stores and became something of a cult favorite. While not extremely common today, it’s a sought-after piece among collectors who appreciate its bold design and excellent audio quality.

Final Thoughts

In a collection filled with consoles, games, and accessories, the Samsung GX TV feels like a centerpiece. It’s functional, stylish, and uniquely suited to the retro aesthetic. It doesn’t just play games—it frames them, both visually and audibly, in a way that makes the experience feel extra special.

For me, this TV is more than just a display—it’s a piece of retro history that adds personality to my gaming setup. And honestly, who doesn’t love opening up those speaker doors and feeling like they’re powering up a gaming machine from the future?

Office Upgrade!

One of the reasons I've been gone from here is mostly because I've been in the process of upgrading and updating my office. I have been putting cables together, monitors connected and figuring out a way to get all my technology going and easily accessible. I finally managed to organize everything I need in order to get it working. It's great because I am able to use computers I had put away for a while including my Packard Bell, Windows 95, and Windows XP machines to name a few. It was something that was bothering me for a while and I am glad that I finally got to put it all together. Same thing with the monitors and consoles. I was finally able to put them in a way that I can either use them for testing and gaming. So far I have NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Dreamcast, PS2, Wii, and even my Retro Freak connected for usage. It's been a rough remodeling but I am happy with the results. I will keep implementing as I go and come up with better ways to make use of my space. I gotta say, my office is looking amazing! Now, to get more loot!

Game on!

All New Repros Added to the Shoppe! Pokemon Super Gold 97, Pokemon Super Silver 97, Pokemon Blue Full Color Version, Digimon, Gameboy Wars 3, and Dragon Ball

New repros with labels created by yours truly have been added to the shoppe! Be sure to check these out as there some cool gems. I think the most notable are the Pokemon Silver and Gold games as they contain Pokemon that never made the cut of the later released Pokemon Gold and Silver games. Think of it as a beta of the game except this one was complete and in English. It's such a fresh adventure and it's really cool to see the Pokemon that never made it. Also, Pokemon Blue in full color is available which is a really cool remake of the game in full color of the original 1st gen game. You have Dragon Ball Advance Adventure and Digimon Games which are also very interesting but not for everyone. I also had a request for Gameboy Wars 3 from a client and was finally able to pull through with it. Be sure to check out my shop by clicking here or click on the top Shop tab of the page.

Finds 1587: Sony Trinitron KV-1365

A trip to the thrift store turned to be into a wonderful finding. This is the Sony Trinitron KV-1365 released in 1985, the tiny 13" tv comes with sharp picture and it's great for retro gaming including commodore and atari computers. It's a little wonder to look at as the aesthetics are just beautiful. It has the 80s feel that is unmatched. I got it for ten bucks believe it or not and made room for it in my office. It will be the one playing my NES or Atari 7800. It has a wonderful new home here in my headquarters.

All in One Playstation Memory Card

Remember when we used to have our entire lives on a memory card? I sure do. Having those 15 blocks to save your games was something exciting and fun. Not only that, it was precious to us as all of our hard earned work was saved into this little accessory. I still have my other memory cards somewhere put away. As I pick this one up, I wonder what games it contains.... I will keep you updated!

My Gaming Area

Just wanted to show the current state of the area where I pretty much play everything. Can you spot every single console? There are some that are hidden but can be seen if you try hard enough. Anyways, I'll update this once in a while!

Retro Gaming- The Latest in Pinball Video Gaming

In 2012, Stern Pinball, the oldest pinball machine manufacturer in the world located near Chicago. The company creates its pinball machine prototypes and designs as well as tests their products all on the same site. They have created 99% of the pinball machines manufactured and sold in the past 20 years and are the chosen company of professional pinball players in competitions all over the world. This includes amateur enthusiasts who are just now garnering an interest in the retro gaming of pinball.
Stern Pinball has lasted this long and developed its reputation in the pinball industry as a monopoly on the market because it has continued to evolve with the ever-changing gaming culture. In 2012, it teamed up with gaming software developer FarSight Studios.

FarSight Studios is based in California and has been in the video game development business since nearly the beginning. FarSight has an eclectic portfolio of titles to its credit including a multitude of sports games including the NFL games all the way to plug-and-play toys for kids that are created for every platform that is available today in the gaming industry. The two companies’ combined to create The Pinball Arcade.
This video version of pinball simulations included a variety of tables with varying themes including Twilight Zone and Star Trek: The Next Generation. With the success of this product on a number of platforms including iOS AND, Windows, PS3, PS4, X360, XBLA, Wii, and XONE, PSVita, to name a few, the two companies have teamed up again to create a new and improved version entitled, Stern Pinball Arcade.

Stern Pinball Arcade- Features and Platforms

The new and improved version offers 3D play that simulates an old-fashioned arcade game with neon lights, retro sounds, and other retro novelty in play but with 21st-century optics. The software configurations are compiled from actual pinball tables and the game is guaranteed to give 100% accuracy in play to every gamer that uses it.
Some highlights are:
• Opportunities for bragging rights on a global scale for each individual pinball table
• Single or multi-player game mode
• The option for professional upgrades
• New features released on a regular basis
• Table packs available
• Free one-table demo download available

There is also a mode called the Stern Challenge where the gamer has to attempt to achieve a specific score on each pinball table in order to earn additional points called Challenge points in order to continue to the next pinball table. This added challenge is a separate gaming experience that a player can choose to participate in.
Some of the pinball table themes that are included in this version are:
• Star Trek: Vengeance Premium
• Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
• Starship Troopers
• Harley Davidson Third Edition
• AC/DC to name a few…

For anyone who may be a pinball aficionado or just wanting to try the retro feel of pinball, this game will challenge both types of gamers. Streaming on Twitch !!! Game ON!

So I haven't really put it out there but I've started streaming on Twitch for about a month and a half now and it's a lot of fun. Sadly, the streams are limited due to the crappy internet I currently have, but it'll change soon enough so I can't wait! I hate when it becomes an issue especially when you are trying to stream games that don't take much graphical capabilities. Anyways, you can click here to go to my channel and follow me! I also added a button on the right side of the page that'll light up when I'm live! Definitely check it out and game on! I accept game requests!

Ads from the past 278: Game Ware

This is a very interesting ad. I guess if you want to make a game, you better have at least 15k and a lot of patience. We don't need stuff like this nowadays but it makes you wonder who would've paid that much.

Ads from the past 276: Blockbuster Video

For people like me who couldn't afford every single release out there, there was Blockbuster Video. A nice little place where you could rent every new release out! It was one of the most awesome places ever! You would have to be there first when a new game was out for rent or else wait all weekend for the copies to be returned in order to rent them out. Those were the days....

Retro Gaming News: Rainbow: texture format converter

"Rainbow is a tool intended to convert different graphics formats from video games assets to and from user editable images (like png). It currently supports almost every variant of the TIM2 format.
The main difference with other great tools like Tile Molester and Crystal Tile 2 is to provide direct support to proprietary graphics formats found in “new generation” consoles, like PS2, PSP, Wii, etc., instead of dealing with just the raw image data.
Features
  • The underlying image library has almost complete support to TIM2 texture files usually found in PS2 and PSP games. The app supports multi-layer, multi-clut, swizzled (PSP)/unswizzled TIM2 images with both linear, interleaved palettes, and segments headers eventually extended with custom user data (usually used by programmers).
  • Can open textures in any format supported by the underlying image library.
  • Can open whole folders in search of supported texture formats. All known texture files are then displayed in a list.
  • Can export and import textures in suitable image formats for editing (like png).
  • Any additional information specific to the texture is preserved when exporting/importing (like the TIM2 header data), in order to have a one-to-one correspondence with the original texture.
  • Customizable background color for transparent and semi-transparent images with chessboard like pattern.
  • Finally, Rainbow supports parameters via command line: the first parameter is the name of a texture you would like to open.
The GitHub repository in the relevant link contains the complete source code and more informations on how to use Rainbow."
