Hellspire – A Brutal, Retro-Inspired Tower Climb

Indie developer Crabbe has unleashed something punishing, stylish, and addictively tense with Hellspire, available now on itch.io. Inspired by the difficulty-driven platformers of the late 80s and early 90s, the game challenges players to ascend a deadly tower where every mistake has consequences.

The Premise

The concept is simple yet unforgiving: climb the Hellspire. Armed only with your reflexes and precision, you must leap across perilous gaps, avoid spikes, and survive increasingly dangerous traps. Much like classics such as Ghosts ’n Goblins or modern masocore hits like Jump King, Hellspire is built around the thrill of risk and the agony of failure. Fall too far, and you’ll lose progress, forcing you to master every jump and obstacle.

Visuals and Atmosphere

The pixel art style perfectly captures the feel of a grim, infernal tower while still feeling fresh and sharp. There’s a heavy use of deep reds, dark shadows, and menacing set pieces that emphasize the oppressive climb. Combined with its moody chiptune-inspired soundtrack, the game immerses you in a hellish ascent that feels equal parts nostalgic and modern.

Gameplay Experience

At its core, Hellspire is a test of patience and precision. The controls are tight and responsive, meaning every success feels earned — and every failure is on you. Unlike games that hold your hand, Hellspire demands dedication. Each new section ramps up the challenge, introducing trickier platforming sequences that require exact timing.

For players who love the thrill of repetition and improvement, this is where Hellspire shines. It rewards persistence, transforming frustration into the satisfaction of finally clearing that one brutal jump.

Why It Stands Out

The indie scene is packed with difficult platformers, but Hellspire carves its niche by combining old-school charm with modern polish. It’s a love letter to the era of tough-but-fair gaming, yet it avoids feeling dated thanks to clever design and stylish presentation.

It’s not a game for everyone — casual players may find the relentless punishment overwhelming — but for those who crave challenge, Hellspire offers a rewarding climb that will keep you coming back.

Final Thoughts

Hellspire is a brutal, beautifully crafted platformer that embraces the spirit of retro gaming while providing a fresh test for modern players. If you enjoy precision platforming, a steep challenge, and the satisfaction of conquering the impossible, this game deserves a spot on your radar.

You can try it now over on itch.io.
