Retro Gaming News: Super Boy 4 Individuality Improvement

"This is a hack of Super Boy 4 within which changes some of the graphics of to be more original. This is because Super Boy 4 is the only entry in the Super Boy series to distance itself enough from the Super Mario Bros. games to actually be judgeable on its own merits.
This hack also retitles the game as “Super Boy”, because the other Super Boy games were all blatant COPIES of the Super Mario Bros. games, whereas this one is only a knock-off clone.

Retro Gaming News: Cosmic Balloon Assault

"In the first ever published Balloon Fight level hack, the balloon fighters find themselves having to conquer new worlds that they never knew existed.
Here’s a general list of everything that has been changed in this hack:
  • 12 brand new Phases
  • New title screen
  • Starting lives are now 6 instead of 2
  • Bonus Phases have been modified: balloon rising speeds, points per balloon, and super bonus points rewards
  • Some surprise graphical appearances from other games
  • NROM-128 to NROM-256 conversion/ROM expansion
  • Intro music plays at the beginning of every Phase instead of the first of every 3 Phases
  • Phase designs are revisited starting from Phase 1 instead of Phase 4
  • Custom palette code: each Phase and Bonus Phase has its own unique palette; the original game had different palettes for every 3 Phases
This hack was created as a proof of concept for a Balloon Fight level hack, in contrast to previous Balloon Fight hacks that are primarily graphical hacks.
The level format and basic components of the game have been documented and submitted separately, available for other ROM hackers to potentially create their own awesome Balloon Fight level hacks! Download the collection of documents for Balloon Fight Level Hacking here.
Due to NROM-128 to NROM-256 ROM expansion, this hack uses the BPS patch format instead of the IPS patch format. Please download the beat utility by byuu and refer to the readme file for appropriate patching instructions."

Retro Gaming News: Translation Release: God-Fighter Zeroigar (PC-FX)

"One of only three respectable action games on the Japan-exclusive PC-FX console, “God-Fighter Zeroigar” is a 2D vertical scrolling shooter that came out this very week back in 1997. Rather than an arcade-style high score challenge, it is a console-style epic, sporting a unique level-up system and a highly developed story told through in-game events and roughly 16 minutes of high-quality hand-drawn anime FMV.
The game’s complex game system and deep story have made Zeroigar highly inaccessible to non-Japanese speakers in the 18 years since its release. As of today, however, there is a patch that eliminates this problem completely.
You’ll see that the title screen menu, the complex level-up/repair screen, the in-game icons and dialogue text, and even the credits are now in English. What you might be surprised to see in addition is that the FMVs are fully subtitled with no loss to the original image.
This was only possible because of three things: the nature of the PC-FX FMV playback chip, the windowed original video giving us room to put subtitles in their own black space, and there being just enough bandwidth in the data stream to fit them.
Zeroigar’s story is both a throwback to classic 1970s robot anime and something quite unique. An evil empire is taking over the galaxy, but one of their scientists escapes with the plans for their ultimate weapon and flees far away…to Earth in 1945, where she encounters a Japanese pilot just returning from the war who might be able to help her.
Give this game a try in Mednafen, the only emulator that fully supports it, or enjoy it on your real PC-FX system. Elmer and SamIAm, respectively the hacker and translator of the project, and many others who helped along the way all think you’ll love it.
…and would you believe that the patch is only 1.3MB!
Just remember to put the Mode 1 switch on your controller to B to toggle autofire. :)

Retro Gaming News: Final Fantasy II Rebalanced

"Final Fantasy II Rebalanced is a small and simple romhack made using Mr. Lenophis’ utility “Jade” (with some minor work done in WindHex). The primary aim of the project is to ease the player into the game by not cramming the “learn by doing” mechanic down their throat.
This is accomplished in quite a rudimentary fashion, by simply handing the player a basic skill set at the start of the game.
By the time the midgame is underway, the difficulty ramps up, but the endgame was streamlined as well, to make for an overall “smoother” feel to the difficulty curve.
Make no mistake: the game will still game over the player if they do something profoundly stupid, just not as early or as often. For those who enjoy the ability to “pick up and play,” Final Fantasy II Rebalanced offers not a declawed lion, but simply medical insurance for the lion tamer."
