Finds 2079: Pikapal, Floppy Disks, and Games!

Finds #2079: Pikachu, Floppy Disks, and a Great Stack of Games!

There’s something I really enjoy about adding a little bit of everything to the collection. Sometimes a new collection haul is all about one particular console or genre, and other times you come across a group of items that couldn’t be more different from one another. That’s exactly what happened with this latest batch of finds!

This time around, we have some adorable Pokémon merchandise, a handful of classic Sony floppy disks, and a fantastic selection of PlayStation games spanning the PS4 and PS5 generations.

Pikachu Gets a Winter Makeover!

Let’s start with the star of the photo: this absolutely adorable Pikachu plush!

Pikachu is already one of the most recognizable characters in gaming, but this particular version comes ready for the cold weather. The blue winter hat, complete with Pikachu ears sticking through the sides and a fluffy pom-pom on top, gives this plush a wonderfully seasonal look.

The snowflake designs on the hat are a great little detail, too. It’s definitely the kind of collectible that adds some personality to the gaming room rather than simply sitting on a shelf alongside games.

And honestly, Pikachu looks pretty happy about being surrounded by all these new additions!

A Little Piece of Computer History

Behind the games are several boxes of Sony floppy disks.

For anyone who grew up with modern storage, it can be easy to forget just how important floppy disks once were. Before CDs, DVDs, USB drives, and cloud storage became commonplace, floppy disks were one of the standard ways to save and transfer computer files and software.

These Sony-branded disks are especially fun for a collection because they represent an entirely different era of technology. The familiar blue packaging and classic floppy disk format immediately bring back memories of older PCs and the days when storage space was measured in much smaller numbers than we're used to today.

They may not be video games themselves, but they fit perfectly with a collection that celebrates the history of gaming and computing.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance

Moving into the games, we have Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance.

Released in 2023, Quest for Balance lets players revisit the world of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. Players can control characters including Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph while traveling through the four nations and using the various bending abilities. The game also features two-player cooperative play.

For an Avatar fan, having a physical copy in the collection is a nice addition, particularly alongside the many other anime-inspired and Japanese-style games in this haul.

Nioh 2

Next up is Nioh 2 for PS4.

This is one of those games that fits right at home in a collection of action RPGs. Developed by Team Ninja, Nioh 2 takes players into a supernatural version of Sengoku-era Japan, where samurai warriors and Yokai creatures are equally dangerous.

The game originally launched for PS4 on March 13, 2020, and eventually received a PS5 version as part of Nioh 2 Remastered.

If you enjoy challenging combat, character customization, Japanese history, and plenty of monsters trying to kill you, Nioh 2 has plenty to offer.

Dark Rose Valkyrie

Another interesting addition is Dark Rose Valkyrie for PS4.

Released in North America in 2017 by Idea Factory International, this is a Japanese-style RPG developed by Compile Heart. The game combines traditional RPG combat with a rather unusual mystery element: members of the Valkyrie Force can potentially be infected, meaning players have to investigate and interrogate their teammates to figure out who has been compromised.

That combination of RPG mechanics, anime-style presentation, and visual-novel-inspired investigation makes Dark Rose Valkyrie a particularly interesting physical addition.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

The PS5 collection also gets some love with Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

Released in 2024, Eiyuden Chronicle is a traditional-style JRPG created by members of the team behind the Suikoden series. The game features a huge cast of characters and a classic fantasy story involving war, political conflict, friendship, and the struggle for power.

The PlayStation version supports both PS4 and PS5, with the PS5 version releasing alongside the game on April 23, 2024.

For fans of old-school JRPGs, this is definitely one worth having in a physical collection.

And There’s Even More!

There are a couple of other interesting games included in this haul, including a Japanese anime-themed release and another PS5 title with a strong mecha/action aesthetic. The variety is one of the things I like most about this particular group of finds.

You have modern PS5 releases sitting alongside PS4 RPGs, an Avatar game, Japanese gaming material, computer-history memorabilia, and, of course, a giant Pikachu wearing a winter hat!

That’s quite a collection of different gaming eras represented in one photo.

Another Great Find for the Collection

This was definitely a fun batch of additions to the Retro Gaming Life collection. From the nostalgia of the Sony floppy disks to the modern PS5 releases, there’s a little something here for just about every kind of gamer.

And while the games are obviously the main attraction, I think the Pikachu plush might have stolen the show this time around. It’s hard to compete with a giant Pikachu wearing a winter hat!

As always, every new addition helps make the collection a little more interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the next Finds brings.

What do you think of this latest batch of additions? Which item would you want to add to your own collection? Let me know in the comments!

Stay tuned to Retro Gaming Life for more games, collectibles, vintage computer finds, and plenty more gaming goodness!

Ads From the Past 491: Sword and Sorcery Music CD

Blog Post: When RPG Music Rode a Potato — The Wildly Wholesome World of Sword & Sorcery GM-Progress-1

Welcome, brave adventurer, to the most unexpectedly adorable detour in the history of 3DO-related media. Today, we're casting "Summon Nostalgia" to take a look at a magical relic from the mid-'90s: an ad for “Sword & Sorcery GM-Progress-1”, a soundtrack release tied to Micro Cabin’s fantasy RPG for the 3DO. It’s got knights, capes, majestic music… and one extremely rideable tuber.

🎵 Not a Game, But a Soundtrack (With a Side of RPG)

Let’s get this straight: this isn't actually an ad for the game itself—it's for the music. Specifically, it promotes the GM-Progress-1 CD, which dropped on November 25, 1995, featuring a whopping 32 tracks, including original compositions and 3D audio arrangements (more on that in a second).

This was part of a larger branding push by Micro Cabin to elevate game soundtracks to the level of film scores. Think “Final Fantasy” before it got mainstream orchestra tours, except on the 3DO and accompanied by a caped anime knight galloping on a sentient yam.

🐾 That Potato Beast

You can’t ignore it. Front and center, the ad features a wide-eyed adventurer confidently riding a plump, sentient potato-like creature—equal parts blobby and blissful. Is it a magical animal companion? A vehicle? A vegetable? We may never know. But one thing’s certain: it absolutely slaps as a mascot.

This is peak mid-90s fantasy anime energy, where the mascot doesn’t need to make sense—it just needs to be cute, marketable, and capable of galloping across fantasy landscapes with zero aerodynamic logic.

🔊 "3DME" – The Audiophile's Fantasy

Much of the ad hypes up a mysterious innovation called 3DME, or "3D Micro Effect." This was a cutting-edge (at the time) sound engineering technique that aimed to give music a deeper sense of space and immersion, mimicking stereo surround effects for a more “theater-like” experience—especially when used with headphones.

The idea? Let RPG fans hear game soundtracks in ways they'd never imagined, as if they were inside the game world itself. It’s kind of adorable how hard this ad leans into the “future of audio” angle, complete with technobabble and excitement typically reserved for cyberpunk novels.

🧝‍♀️ Sword & Sorcery – A Forgotten Fantasy

While the music took center stage here, Sword & Sorcery was also one of the few genuine RPGs for the 3DO—a console that wasn't exactly known for traditional Japanese RPGs. Developed by Micro Cabin (of Xak and Fray fame), it tried to bring a high-fantasy experience to a platform better known for FMV-heavy American games and early 3D experimentation.

This CD release was not just a soundtrack—it was an expansion of the game’s universe. It showed that even in the early CD-ROM era, developers and publishers were already thinking of their games as multimedia franchises.

💿 Bonus Features? You Bet

Not content to offer just music, the ad promises an original sticker with the first pressings of the CD. That’s right: if you were lucky enough to snag an early copy, you could decorate your school binder, Walkman, or probably even your potato creature with a logo straight from the land of magic and melodies.

🎤 Final Thoughts: Peak ’90s Weirdness, and We Love It

This ad is the best kind of strange. It captures a moment in time when developers and musicians were experimenting wildly, trying to make every product feel like part of a fantastical, immersive universe.

From its chipper anime art to its blimp-like beast of burden, and its obsession with immersive 3D audio, the Sword & Sorcery GM-Progress-1 soundtrack isn’t just a musical release—it’s a window into a forgotten world of quirky ambition, where even a CD release could promise high adventure.

So here’s to the bold, the bizarre, and the beautifully earnest marketing of '90s game culture. May your music always sound like it's echoing through a magical forest… while you ride a potato into battle.

📀 Have a favorite retro game soundtrack or bizarre game mascot? Drop it in the comments—bonus points if it also looks like a root vegetable.

Finds 868: Back in Action!

After a long time, I finally decided to go hunting again and although it wasn't an amazing day of findings, I had an amazing time. There is always something to add to the collection.

Retrobeat Tuesdays 013: Super Mario Bros 3 Athletic Music

This Tuesday we have a classic tune from a classic game. Super Mario Bros 3 introduced us to some of the most amazing playtforming action you could ever ask for but that's not all, the music for the game was also as fantastic as the game. There is no way we can ever forget about this title without its music. Be sure to check it out and give respects to the reason why many of us are still hooked on video games to this day.

Finds 356: Mac Powerbook, G.I.Joes, Foot Soldier, NES Controller Sansui, and Lots More!

What a day of odd finds. There is always something to pick up even if it's not video game related. You do have to expand your mind to other things anyways. I myself collect action figures as well but barely run into the ones I'm looking for. Nevertheless, I came up big in the action figure department and then some. There are also a lot of other interesting finds. Does the photo make you wonder? It should! So why not check what I've found today at the flea market and Play n Trade ^_^

Finds 292: King's Quest III, Orange GBA, And More!

It was another joyful day of hunting. This time around I was able to find great additions for my collection. Check it out!

I picked up this PC game for 1.95. I'm sure all of you know how much of a fan of classic PC games I am especially because I droll over the box art. Can't get any more beautiful!
I picked up this orange GBA for 9.95 and the original Gameboy for 4.95. They both work great. It's about time I got a fully working original Gameboy.

I can never say no to cheap anime items. I picked this soundtrack from the .hack series for .95 cents. Most of the music is quite relaxing ^_^

Then finally picked these two games up for 1.95 each. I'm not even sure if I had either of them but whatever, it'll do.

So that's all for now. I was mostly excited for the orange GBA as I'm a fan of variant handhelds and consoles. I just can't get enough of them! Until next time!

King's Quest III (PC)

Scooby Doo Mystery (SNES)
International Superstar Soccer 64 (N64)

Finds 282: Mortal Kombat!

So here we have some odd finds. I picked up this Mortal Kombat Album for .95 cents with some weird music from the movie which I'm not sure if it was ever used in the movie. There is one good song though which is the original Mortal Kombat theme song. Be sure to listen to track number 5 on this one! Just as with any music CD, there is only one good song in the entire disc.
I also picked this game up which makes me wonder why was this released and all sorts of kewl RPGs held back? I guess we'll never find out. I paid 1.95 for this one.

And that's all there is to show for now :)

Anime Song of the Week #2 Arrival of Tears - 11 Eyes

This is the opening theme song of the anime 11 Eyes. The anime was decent but wasn't as good as the song. I would watch it if you don't have anything better to do.

Anime Song of the Week #1: Baptize- Seikon no Qwaser

Baptize- Seikon no Qwaser

This is the second opening theme of the extremely perverted alchemy anime Seikon no Qwaser. I really enjoyed this song as well as the anime.
