🎮 Three New PlayStation Vita Additions to the Collection!
Another great addition to the collection! This time, I picked up three PlayStation Vita games from the Hyperdimension Neptunia universe: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation, and Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed.
The three games make for a particularly fun group because they showcase two different sides of the Neptunia series—the traditional RPG gameplay of the Re;Birth games and the fast-paced hack-and-slash action of Neptunia U.
💜 Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation
The first game in this haul is Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation, an RPG developed by Idea Factory, Compile Heart, and Felistella.
Originally released for the PlayStation Vita in North America on January 27, 2015, Re;Birth2 is a remake of Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2. Instead of focusing primarily on the four main CPUs, this adventure puts their younger sisters—the CPU Candidates—in the spotlight.
The story takes place in Gamindustri, where the CPUs have been defeated and a sinister organization known as ASIC, the Arfoire Syndicate of International Crime, has taken control. It's up to the sisters to step up and save the world.
Gameplay combines traditional turn-based RPG mechanics with a surprising amount of customization. Players can create equipment, manipulate the game world through Plans, recruit characters, and build their party while enjoying the series' trademark fourth-wall-breaking humor.
For a Vita collector, this is an especially nice one to have because the physical Vita release represents an important part of the English-language history of the Neptunia series.
💙 Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation
Next up is Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3: V Generation, another RPG and remake—this time of the PlayStation 3 game Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory.
The North American Vita version was released on June 30, 2015. Idea Factory International describes it as a remake featuring additional story content, new scenarios, an improved battle system, and plenty of the series' trademark fourth-wall-breaking comedy.
This time, Neptune finds herself thrown into an alternate dimension of Gamindustri with an '80s-inspired setting. To get home, she needs to collect enough Shares while dealing with the Seven Sages, who want to eliminate the CPUs.
One of the game's fun features is its expanded combat system, including customizable attack combos of up to five moves. Players can also create Plans that modify aspects of the world, customize equipment, and make use of Stella's Dungeon system.
This is arguably one of the most interesting games of the three from a collector's perspective because it combines the traditional Neptunia RPG formula with a wonderfully bizarre alternate-dimension storyline.
❤️ Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed
The third addition is something completely different: Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed.
Released for the PlayStation Vita in North America on May 19, 2015, this game was the first Neptunia title to move into the 3D action hack-and-slash genre. It was developed by Idea Factory, Compile Heart, and Tamsoft.
Rather than the turn-based RPG battles found in the Re;Birth games, Neptunia U lets players jump directly into fast-paced battles against huge numbers of enemies.
The story takes place in a peaceful Gamindustri where the CPUs and CPU Candidates are essentially bored because there aren't enough monsters to fight. Things change when journalists Famitsu and Dengekiko arrive and start creating situations for the Goddesses to investigate—and fight through.
The game features a roster of playable characters, tag-team gameplay, customizable equipment, aerial and ground combos, and plenty of the over-the-top humor fans expect from the series.
It's a really nice contrast to the other two games in this haul.
🎮 A Great Vita Collection Pickup
These three games represent a pretty good snapshot of what made the PlayStation Vita such an interesting handheld for Japanese RPG and anime-inspired games.
- 💜 Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation — traditional Neptunia RPG focused on the CPU Candidates.
- 💙 Re;Birth3: V Generation — an expanded RPG adventure with an '80s-inspired alternate Gamindustri.
- ❤️ Neptunia U: Action Unleashed — a fast-paced hack-and-slash spin-off.
It's also worth noting that all three eventually made their way beyond the Vita. Re;Birth2 and Re;Birth3 received PC releases, while Neptunia U also came to PC. The Re;Birth games have even been revisited for modern platforms.
For Retro Gaming Life, these are another three physical games preserved in the collection—and they're a great reminder of just how unique the Vita's library was. Between its Japanese RPGs, visual novels, niche releases, and anime-inspired games, the Vita has become a very interesting system to collect for.
Three more Vita games added to the collection! 🎮💜
