Finds 2059: Gunbird 2 for the Dreamcast

New Addition to the Collection: Gunbird 2 on the Sega Dreamcast

Another amazing pickup has landed in the collection, and this one is a true arcade classic — Gunbird 2 for the Sega Dreamcast. For fans of fast-paced shooters, colorful arcade action, and the golden era of Dreamcast imports and ports, this is one of those titles that instantly stands out on the shelf.

Released by Capcom for the Dreamcast in North America in 2000, Gunbird 2 was originally developed by Psikyo, a studio legendary for its intense vertical scrolling shooters. The Dreamcast version brought the arcade experience home almost perfectly, making it one of the console’s must-have shoot-’em-ups.

Right away, the cover art grabs attention with its bright anime-inspired style and chaotic cast of characters. It perfectly captures the energy of the game itself — fast, flashy, and completely over-the-top in the best way possible.

Unlike many traditional shooters that focused heavily on military themes and realistic settings, Gunbird 2 leaned into fantasy and comedy. Players can choose from a quirky cast of characters, each with their own attacks, dialogue, and endings. The game mixes magical worlds, steampunk-inspired designs, bizarre enemies, and giant bosses into one nonstop arcade thrill ride.

One of the coolest things about Gunbird 2 is its gameplay pacing. Psikyo shooters are famous for their quick reflex-heavy design and brutal difficulty spikes. Enemy bullets come fast, bosses attack aggressively, and memorization becomes key if you want to survive later stages. Despite the challenge, the game remains incredibly satisfying thanks to its smooth controls and tight arcade mechanics.

The Dreamcast was an absolute powerhouse for arcade shooters, and Gunbird 2 helped cement that reputation. Sega’s final console became a haven for fans of the genre, with titles like Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, Giga Wing, and Zero Gunner 2 building an incredible library for shmup collectors.

Another interesting detail is the inclusion of Morrigan Aensland from Capcom’s Darkstalkers series as a playable character in the Dreamcast version. That crossover appearance gave the port extra personality and made it even more memorable among fans.

Today, original Dreamcast copies of Gunbird 2 are becoming increasingly collectible, especially complete copies in good condition. As retro game collecting continues to grow, Dreamcast shooters remain some of the most sought-after titles because of their smaller print runs and dedicated fanbase.

This pickup feels like a perfect addition to the collection because it represents everything great about the Dreamcast era: arcade perfection at home, creative experimentation, and games that weren’t afraid to be weird and challenging.

If you’re a fan of classic arcade shooters, Gunbird 2 is one of those games that absolutely deserves a spot in the collection.

What’s your favorite Dreamcast shooter?

Star Fox 64 — Now Flying on Dreamcast

Long-time fans of the rail-shooter classic have reason to cheer: an unofficial port of Star Fox 64 for the Sega Dreamcast is now available. The port — created by homebrew developer JNMartin84 — brings the beloved 1997 title to Sega’s final console, something that would’ve seemed unthinkable back in the day.

Why This Matters for Retro Gamers

  • Crossing Console Boundaries: Star Fox 64 — originally for the Nintendo 64 (N64) — never had any official release on Dreamcast. That makes this port a rare “what-if turned real”: Nintendo’s space shooters on a Sega machine.
  • Homebrew Scene Showing Its Power: Thanks to the diligence of decompilation projects like Sonicdcer’s reverse-engineering of Star Fox 64’s code, what started as raw source data was adapted to run natively on Dreamcast hardware — not via generic emulation, but a true port optimized for the console’s CPU and GPU.
  • A Boost for Dreamcast Legacy: The Dreamcast homebrew community has already pulled off impressive feats — from ports of Mario Kart 64 to DOOM 64 — but seeing a major N64 flagship like Star Fox land on DC is a milestone that underscores just how alive retro gaming still is.

What to Expect — Pros and What’s Still Rough

✅ What works

  • The core gameplay — barrel rolls, fast-paced space combat, and the classic missions — reportedly runs smoothly.
  • The port takes advantage of Dreamcast’s hardware (SH-4 CPU + PowerVR GPU), meaning the experience doesn’t feel like emulating sluggish N64 hardware but more like a native Dreamcast release.

⚠️ What’s imperfect (for now)

  • As of the initial release, there are caveats: some sound is missing and there are graphical glitches. The developers themselves note these, suggesting fixes may come in future updates.
  • It isn’t an official release. As with many homebrew efforts, features might be limited compared to a polished commercial re-release (e.g., music, bug-free textures, maybe no clean widescreen or resolution upscaling).

Community Reaction — Fans Are Hyped

On forums like r/dreamcast, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. One user on the Reddit thread titled “Star Fox 64 Dreamcast port out today” wrote:

“Dreamcast has never had it better.”

Others are already dreaming aloud: what if future versions included enhanced visuals, restored audio, or even modern features like widescreen support or improved controls?

For many, this port isn’t just a technical achievement — it’s a statement: classics like Star Fox 64 still matter, and the spirit of discovery and preservation in the retro gaming community is as strong as ever.

What This Means for Retro Gaming Life

If you run a retro gaming blog (like mine), this is exactly the kind of news to spotlight — because it bridges eras and consoles in a way very few “official releases” do. It’s a reminder that retro isn’t just about nostalgia: it’s about rediscovery, community effort, and keeping the spirit of classic games alive on platforms that may have seemed abandoned.

For collectors, Dreamcast fans, or just longtime SF64 players curious to hear those lasers and boost those Arwings on Sega hardware — this is a must-try. And for retro gamers overall, it’s a celebration: part fan-project, part technical wizardry, all heart.

Be sure to check it out here!

Lylat Wars Takes Flight on Dreamcast

A Dreamcast Renaissance: From Doom 64 to Star Fox 64

The year 2025 has already proven to be a banner year for Dreamcast homebrew development—and now, one of the boldest projects yet is in the works. Developer Jnmartin84, famed for porting Doom 64 and Wipeout to Sega’s beloved console, has just achieved something jaw-dropping: he got Star Fox 64 (known as Lylat Wars in Europe) up and running on the Dreamcast in just two days.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.ukRetro DodoGenerationAmiga.com

Porting Speed: Two Days from Ground Zero

Yes, you read that right—two. Freaking. Days. While fellow developer Falco Girgis was busy polishing the final bugs for the upcoming Mario Kart 64 Dreamcast port (which itself is generating waves), Jnmartin84 stealthily got Star Fox 64 functional on the system.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.ukRetro Dodo

A Track Record of Homebrew Excellence

This isn’t Jnmartin84’s first rodeo. His portfolio includes:

His latest project only reinforces his reputation as one of the Dreamcast homebrew scene’s most accomplished and prolific developers.

What Works—And What Doesn’t (Yet)

From what’s been showcased, the gameplay looks surprisingly smooth. Barrel rolls, laser blasting, and intense dogfights in space are all present and accounted for.GenerationAmiga.com+1Retro Dodothedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk

However, it's still a work in progress—some assets are missing or glitchy. Voice lines and sound effects, in particular, are still to be refined. Still, the foundation is solid, making this one port that’s bound to get tighter and crisper in the coming weeks.GenerationAmiga.comRetro Dodothedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk

Why This Matters

  • Homebrew vitality: The Dreamcast may’ve flamed out commercially, but its passionate fan community continues to breathe new life into the system. These ports—especially from high-caliber developers like Jnmartin84—keep the Dreamcast vibrant and relevant.

  • Technical achievement: Pulling off an N64 rail shooter on Dreamcast hardware, and doing it in two days, is nothing short of engineering wizardry.

  • Nostalgia meets innovation: For longtime gamers, it’s surreal to see retro favorites reborn on alternative platforms—not to mention seeing Sonic pop into Mario Kart or Lylat Wars get a Dreamcast makeover.

What's Next

The Mario Kart 64 Dreamcast port is expected to release publicly soon, and once that's out, Jnmartin84’s focus seems squarely set on polishing Star Fox 64. If his track record is any indication, fans can expect nothing less than a high-quality, playable homebrew experience.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.ukGBAtempGenerationAmiga.com

In Summary

  • Dev: Jnmartin84—Dreamcast homebrew maestro

  • Achievement: Star Fox 64 running on Dreamcast in just 2 days

  • Track record: Doom 64, Wipeout, Mario Kart 64

  • Current status: Smooth gameplay visuals, but audio and polish pending

  • Why it matters: A striking merging of nostalgia, technical prowess, and fan-driven innovation

Stay tuned—this port is going to be one for the ages in the retro-gaming community.

Finds 1710: Bootlegs and more Bootlegs!

Bootlegs from a friend, this is a very nice set of bootleg stuff and it's just too much to mention in one photo so please check it out yourself. The most interesting stuff from this lot is the Dreamcast bootleg games as they were made in a factory as they aren't burnt. Now that's interesting because I've encountered Playstation 1 games like that. Gotta love bootlegs!

Finds 1654: Wild Guns Reloaded, Vectorman, Mini Mac, Sonic Adventure, and More!

A week full of different hunting leads to multiple games additions. There is a little bit of everything so lets take a look!

Here is Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast, Wild Guns Reloaded, and a blue PlayStation 4 controller. I already have Wild Guns Reloaded for PS4, but I wanted the Switch version. The controller was tested and works! The Sonic Adventure is a little scratch but I’m sure it works alright.

Here is some PC software. Flight Simulator 98 is part of the series which was shockingly really popular, so popular that it had a yearly release like a sports title. The other two are sealed goodies. I think I already have them but I don’t know yet.

Here is Vectorman for the Sega Genesis, Final Fantasy VI disc only for PS1, and a Mac Mini. I just found out that you need a proprietary monitor for the Mac Mini so I’m kind of bummed out for that. I will look for one, but I don’t really have the room for much!!

Finds 1565: Thrifty Ten Dollar Finds

Here are some findings from the thrift store. It was a really cool day as I was able to find stuff for PC, PS2, Wii, and even Dreamcast! I never ever find Dreamcast anymore so I'm happy about this. Going to have to check them out soon!

Sega Saturday 012: Crazy Taxi (DC)

Are you ready to make some crazy money? This is one of the most fun games for the Dreamcast that you can always just pick up and play and not worry about anything. It's arcade fun at full blast! Lets go make some crazy money! I was never able to make a lot of money, but apparently the key is to use shortcuts to drop off your clients a lot faster. In other words, learn the map and shortcuts in order to master it. Now, that's making some crazy money!

Sega Saturday 006: Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast

This Saturday we have another amazing Sonic game. This is probably one of my favorite Sonic games that excels in story line, gameplay, music, and overall experience. This is one game every Sonic fan should play. this is the jump that Sonic made form 2D to 3D that it needed and don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting the first Sonic Adventure down, it’s just that my personal opinion definitely connects more with the second entry of the series.

Not only does the game starts with a catchy song (City Escape) but it also brings a lot of great level design to the series. I definitely love how they could make a city into a Sonic level. It’s such an awesome experience. Not only that, you get a vast amounts of levels and play as other characters to keep the story moving. It also has a bad guys story mode so you can play trough the game as the bad guys as well. It definitely opens so many more options to the game, it’s wonderful. Of course, I will mention that the camera is still an issue and that’s just one of the very few issues this game has. You can get this entry in various ways. There was a release for the GameCube and of course the Dreamcast. You can always just emulate it as I believe the Dreamcast emulators are really catching up. Has it been released in other forms?

Finds 1269: Orlando Trip Finds! BomberMan, Blackthorne, Zombie Revenge, and Populous

I recently went to a trip to Orlando and stopped by a game shoppe. It used to be called Game Trader, but they went under years ago. Somehow, this place kept that name. It might be the last one left in the entire country! I ended up picking up some Star Trek TMNT Figures as well as some games.

Speaking of which, I did picked up the Bomberman and Populous at a thrift store but Blackthorne and Zombie Revenge were from the store.
These are the turtles before they were opened and placed on display. Yeah, I'm picky on which action figures I leave sealed!

Finds 1136: Robo Aleste, Heimdall, NHL 94, Corpse Killer, and Sega Smash Hits

It was a Sega day of loot! Especially with the addition of Robo Aleste, there were two other Sega Cd games which were NHL 94 and Heimball. Also, Sega CD 32X title Corpse Killer was another wonderful find. Two Dreamcast games with Sega Smashpack Volume 1 and Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits. I hope to get more stuff soon!

Finds 1129: Local Loot! A bunch of things! Including King of Dragons!

It's been a while since I've been able to find stuff locally. All of this was local believe it or not. Now, where to start? Hmmm... well on the top left we have Top Gear for the SNES, then a Nintendo DS, and some floppy disks which I'm going to turn into DOS game disks with beautiful artwork. Then on the second row you have a Gameboy SP, Sonic Adventure 2, and Bust a Move and Pixel Monsters for PSP. Third row has two awesome titles with The Inmortal and King of Dragons. Finally, on the last row we have some Classic Gameboy games with a classic Gameboy. It's becoming harder to find those locally around here so I'm happy. That's a lot of loot and it was all found locally!

Game-bit of the day 784: Guilty Gear X (DC)

This is said to be the better port of the Guilty Gear X game so it was only natural for me to pick up a copy of it for the correct console. This one is for the Dreamcast if you have't realized it and it's a wonderful fighting game with a beautiful musical score.

Finds 1048: Curse and Guilty Gear X

Two more entries ! Curse is a shoot 'em up for the Mega Drive but of course, it can be played on the Genesis with the right tools. It's very fun but tough! Guilty Gear X is the better version of the game for the Dreamcast. I have yet to try this one out though because my Dreamcast is put away somewhere. Need more room. Also, both of these are recommendations from Game Sack !

Game-bit of the day 727: Biohazard 2 Value Plus (DC)

I'm not even sure what extra it brings but I'm sure it brings something more than the normal games right? Either way, this is my favorite Resident Evil hands down. Nothing like it will ever be released.

November 24, 2016

Game-bit of the day 636: Power Stone (Dreamcast)

This is a very fun games for the Dreamcast. It's kind of like a Smash Bros for the Sega Console and lots of fun especially in four players!

November 22, 2016

Game-bit of the day 634: Mark of the Wolves (Dreamcast)

So this is one of the best fighting games by SNK and thank god we got a Dreamcast version of it. The game is not a perfect port, but it's as close and the cheapest way to play this game. Definitely check it out if you like fighting games/

November 03, 2016

Finds 948: El Viento for Genesis plus other stuff!

I finally got this wonderful game that's tough as nails! That's El Viento alright! I also passed by the local thrift store to pick up some Dreamcast controllers as you can't have enough and they came with VMUs so can't complain about that. There are also some Yugioh cards that I needed for a certain deck. Good stuff all around!

November 01, 2016

Finds 946: Trip to Orlando Finds!

Every so often I take a trip to Central Florida for vacationing or to go look for loot! Sometimes I do find something, sometimes I don't. This was one time that I found lots of interesting items for multiple consoles. I even found a 3DO game! Anyways, it was fun being up there and I'm always happy to bring some great games home. I did my research on these and I don't think I did that bad.

October 02, 2016

Game-bit of the day 585: Tech Romancer (DC)

This is a mech fighting game that's actually very obscure. Released by Capcom, it's definitely a lot of fun to get your mechs fighting each other. It has Japanese voices too! A must play!
