Finds #2080: A PS4, Ghostbusters, and South Park!

Another day means another batch of additions to the Retro Gaming Life collection! This time around, the collection gets a little more modern with a PlayStation 4 console, a couple of controllers, and two games that couldn't be more different from one another: Ghostbusters: The Video Game and South Park: The Fractured but Whole.

There’s something especially fun about these kinds of finds because they aren't just games—they're pieces of gaming hardware and pop-culture history that represent different generations.

Adding a PlayStation 4 to the Collection

The biggest addition in this haul is the PlayStation 4 console.

The PS4 represents a major chapter in Sony's history. Released in 2013, it became one of the most successful video game consoles ever made and helped define the eighth generation of gaming.

This particular console is the original-style PS4, with its distinctive angular design and two-tiered appearance. It's a great system to have in the collection, especially since the PS4 library contains an enormous number of games that are already becoming important parts of modern gaming history.

Of course, a console is much more fun when you have controllers to go with it, and this haul also includes a couple of controllers. Having extra controllers around is always useful, whether they're going to be used for multiplayer gaming or simply kept with the system as part of the collection.

And with that giant Pikachu hanging out in the background, the PS4 definitely has some company!

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

The first game in this haul is Ghostbusters: The Video Game for Xbox 360.

Originally released in 2009, this is a particularly interesting Ghostbusters game because it was created with significant involvement from members of the original movie cast. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson all provided their voices and likenesses for the game.

Rather than simply being another licensed game loosely based on the movies, Ghostbusters: The Video Game was designed to feel like a continuation of the original films. Players take on the role of a new recruit working alongside the Ghostbusters as they investigate supernatural activity around New York City.

The proton pack and ghost-catching equipment are the stars of the show, making the game feel much closer to actually being a Ghostbuster than many earlier licensed games.

The Xbox 360 physical copy is also a nice addition for anyone collecting games from that generation. The green Xbox 360 case immediately stands out among the collection.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole

The second game is South Park: The Fractured but Whole for PlayStation 4.

Released in 2017, this RPG follows up South Park: The Stick of Truth and takes the series' trademark humor into the world of superheroes.

Instead of medieval fantasy, the kids of South Park are now playing superheroes, with Cartman taking on the role of Coon. Naturally, things quickly get much more complicated than a simple game of make-believe.

The game uses turn-based RPG combat while maintaining the distinctive visual style and humor of the television series. One of the most entertaining aspects is how closely the game resembles an interactive episode of South Park.

This physical PS4 copy is a great addition to the collection, especially for fans of licensed games and TV-based video games.

And this particular edition even includes South Park: The Stick of Truth, making it an especially nice pickup for someone who wants both games on one disc.

Two Very Different Games

What I like about this particular haul is the contrast between the two games.

On one side, you have Ghostbusters, with proton packs, ghosts, supernatural investigations, and a story designed to capture the spirit of the original movies.

On the other, you have South Park, with superheroes, ridiculous situations, outrageous humor, and an RPG system underneath it all.

They're completely different experiences, but both are excellent examples of how established pop-culture franchises have been adapted into video games.

Another Great Addition to Retro Gaming Life

This was another fun addition to the collection. The PlayStation 4 gives the hardware side of the collection a boost, while the two games add some great licensed titles from the Xbox 360 and PS4 generations.

As the Retro Gaming Life collection continues to grow, it's always interesting to look back at these different generations of gaming hardware and see how quickly yesterday's modern consoles become part of gaming history.

And of course, having a giant Pikachu supervising the whole operation certainly doesn't hurt!
