Retro Game of the Week 077: Dr Mario (NES)

Just looking at this cover art gives me the chills. Amazing times that will never return...

How would you love to get addicted to drugs? Better yet, get addicted to drugs that kill gems. That's Dr. Mario for you and with such an amazing run to this day, it's the best Mario-related puzzler out there. I remember getting this game and getting hooked right away. The game has an amazing soundtrack that keeps you bouncing from drug use. Mario, for some reason is a doctor although I'm not sure where he studied but many believe he studied in the Mushroom Kingdom as it was the fastest way. He surely made a great career out of it as all he will ever need to do is drop pills in a gigantic bottle full of germs. You would think he would try to do other perverted things like physicals to sexy girls but this is Mario and he is not a pervert among the kids.

The game is a fantastic re-playable masterpiece. You can not only play with one player but with a friend and challenge each other in a round-format setting to see who is king or queen of the drug. Mario will be happy you are in his team, but wait a second! You see two Marios! Something must be wrong! Oh wait, that's just Merio but you will never notice the difference until each of them talk. Merio is Chinese. Moving along, the game challenges you to more viruses as you move along and shows a very interesting scene with the three viruses sitting on top of a tree as something weird passes by. That's the most weird crap I have ever witness! Like seriously, imagine you are a seven year old kid looking at some freakshow floating what is already a very confusing scenery. That's the drug talking right there! I do suggest you try to beat the game in hard and at level 20 as something incredible will happen. I won't go into details of it but it's magical yet sad. It's like something from a story having a happy ending which never happens in real life.

Merio is hiding there!

Furthermore, the music is as stunning as the pills and the graphics are well NES graphics. You can't really say much for that. In fact, I'm not sure how they could tell the graphics were good on a NES game unless they saw the detail of each pixel. Either way, Dr Mario is a must have and it's available in a variety of consoles. I picked the NES one as it's the one where the magic started. You have different ports for the SNES, N64, and Wii. Of course, you can always go to your local emulators and enjoy this bad ass. There is also a Famicom version obviously. That's about it for this week, until next time drug dealer ^_^

WTF!

Mario can be anything in the video game world

Hey Famicom Freak!

Thanks for posting this review, but man I don't agree at all. I think Dr. Mario was the weakest of the early falling block/puzzle game era. If it weren't for the Mario tie-in, would anyone have played this one at all? I don't think so.

I also posted a mini-review of my own on 0x38 - http://0x38.com/151292_By_Platform/151293_NES/153775_Dr_Mario - I'm unapologetic though, I just don't think it's a very good game.

Ah very interesting. Well everyone has their own opinion, it just depends on which way you look and feel about it.
