New Addition: Haunting Starring Polterguy (Sega Genesis, 1993)
Today I’m thrilled to share my latest pickup for the collection — Haunting Starring Polterguy for the Sega Genesis! This quirky and original title from Electronic Arts stands out as one of the most unique games on the system’s library, both for its dark humor and innovative gameplay mechanics. Seeing it complete in box makes it an even more exciting find.
Released in 1993, Haunting Starring Polterguy puts players in the ectoplasmic shoes of Polterguy, a mischievous teenage ghost with a punk attitude who seeks revenge against the greedy Sardini family — the people responsible for his untimely demise due to their faulty skateboards. Instead of traditional combat or platforming, Haunting offers a one-of-a-kind experience: you possess and control various household objects to scare the family members out of their homes. Whether it’s making furniture come alive, blood pour from walls, or skeletons pop out of closets, the goal is simple — scare everyone out before your ecto-energy runs out!
Developed by EA’s Redwood Shores team (which would later evolve into Visceral Games, the studio behind Dead Space), the game was an early example of Electronic Arts experimenting with creative, offbeat ideas. Its cartoony visuals, ghoulish humor, and inventive mechanics made it a cult favorite among Genesis players. A lesser-known but interesting fact — Haunting even received a re-release in some regions and later found its way into EA compilations, though the Genesis version remains the definitive experience.
Playing it today still feels refreshing. There’s something incredibly satisfying about timing scares just right and watching each family member panic as Polterguy gets his ghostly payback. It’s one of those games that perfectly captures the early ‘90s EA attitude — weird, fun, and full of personality.
Adding this to my shelf feels like adding a piece of Sega Genesis history. It’s a reminder that not all 16-bit games had to be about blasting enemies or jumping across platforms — some just wanted to make you laugh while creeping you out.
