Finds 2067: Vintage PC Work in Progress

One of my latest retro computing pickups is this classic beige desktop PC, and while it's far from being finished, it's already proving to be a fun restoration project. There's just something special about bringing older hardware back to life, especially when every upgrade gets it one step closer to becoming the ultimate late 1990s gaming machine.

From the outside, the system has that unmistakable retro PC look—a beige tower, CRT monitor, wired mouse, and a mechanical-style keyboard setup that instantly takes me back to the Windows 95 and Windows 98 era. Seeing classic DOS games running on original hardware instead of an emulator is always a rewarding experience.

At the moment, the system is still missing a few important components before I can really put it through its paces.

What's Still Needed

This project is still a work in progress, and here are the upgrades planned:

• Sound Card – Probably the biggest missing piece. Many DOS games rely on Sound Blaster-compatible audio for music and sound effects, so adding a proper sound card will dramatically improve the experience.
• More RAM – Extra memory will help Windows run more smoothly and provide a better experience for later DOS and Windows titles.
• Replacement CD-ROM Drive – The current optical drive has seen better days, so I'll be installing a newer working drive to make software installation much easier.
• Period-Correct Keyboard – The Dell keyboard currently gets the job done, but I'd like to replace it with something more appropriate for the era to complete the authentic look.

Already Showing Some Life

Even in its incomplete state, the computer is already running games, which is always exciting. Nothing beats seeing colorful pixel art displayed on a real CRT monitor. The scanlines, vibrant colors, and smooth scrolling remind me why many retro enthusiasts still prefer original hardware.

Watching classic DOS titles come alive on equipment they were originally designed for is an experience that modern LCD displays simply can't replicate.

Why Restore Instead of Emulate?

Emulation has become incredibly accurate, but there's still something satisfying about hearing the click of an old power switch, waiting for the BIOS screen to appear, and loading software on original hardware. Every restored computer preserves a small piece of computing history.

Projects like this also give me the opportunity to learn more about vintage PC hardware, troubleshoot aging components, and experience games exactly as they were intended decades ago.

What's Next?

The hunt now begins for the remaining parts. Finding compatible RAM, a quality Sound Blaster-compatible card, a reliable CD-ROM drive, and a matching vintage keyboard is all part of the adventure. Half the fun of retro computing is tracking down these components and slowly transforming an incomplete machine into a fully functional gaming PC.

I'll continue documenting this restoration as more upgrades arrive, and eventually I'll have this system ready for plenty of DOS and Windows 95/98 game videos here on Retro Gaming Life.

Finds 2066: More Additions! Internal DVD Drive, After Dark Screen Savers, Super Paper Mario, and Sonic Unleashed!

Every thrifting trip is a new adventure, and this latest haul brought home another fantastic mix of retro computer hardware, vintage software, and Nintendo Wii games. Whether you're a retro PC enthusiast or a console collector, it's always exciting to rescue these items and give them a new home.

I/O Magic Internal DVD Rewritable Drive

One of the biggest pickups from this trip is a boxed I/O Magic Internal DVD Rewritable Drive. Optical drives may not be as common in modern PCs, but they're still essential for anyone restoring older computers or archiving software and media. Finding one complete in its original retail packaging makes it an even better addition to the collection.

Berkeley After Dark

Another standout is Berkeley After Dark, a classic collection of screen savers from the golden age of personal computing. Before streaming videos and animated wallpapers, screen savers were a fun way to personalize your computer, and Berkeley Systems produced some of the most memorable collections during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This is a nostalgic piece of PC history.

Super Paper Mario (Wii)

Nintendo fans will recognize this game! It's Super Paper Mario for the Wii which combines side scrolling and RPG elements. It's a beautiful classic! 

Sonic Unleashed (Wii)

Also joining the collection is Sonic Unleashed for the Wii. Released during Sonic's transition into the HD era, this version offers its own unique gameplay experience while combining high-speed daytime stages with the more action-focused Werehog levels. It's another welcome addition to the ever-growing Sonic collection.

Another Great Day of Thrifting

One of the best things about collecting is the variety that comes with every thrift store visit. One day you might find vintage PC hardware, and the next you'll uncover classic software or console games you weren't expecting. That's exactly what makes the hunt so enjoyable.

These new additions continue to grow both my retro PC collection and my Nintendo library, and I can't wait to preserve, test, and enjoy each one.

Finds 2065: Thrifty Pick Ups!

Today's thrifting adventure paid off with an awesome mix of retro PC hardware, classic games, and gaming accessories. There's nothing better than finding hidden gems that deserve a place in the collection!

Today's pickups include:

The standout find has to be the boxed Creative Labs Sound Blaster ALS 4000. Original boxed retro PC hardware is becoming increasingly difficult to find, making it a fantastic addition for future vintage PC builds and DOS/Windows gaming.

I was also happy to add SimSafari, one of Maxis' memorable educational simulation titles, along with Fishing Master: World Tour and Super Mario All-Stars for the Wii. Rounding out the haul are two DualShock 4 controllers, which are always great to have for multiplayer sessions or as backups.

Days like this are why I love thrifting. You never know if you'll walk away empty-handed or discover several great additions to the collection in a single stop.
