Recent Pickups: Transformers: Devastation and Area 51
Hunting for retro and pre-owned games is one of the best parts of this hobby, and my collection just got a serious boost with two fantastic new pickups. We are looking at a cross-generational haul today: Transformers: Devastation for the PlayStation 3 and the classic Area 51 for the original PlayStation.
Transformers: Devastation (PS3)
Developed by PlatinumGames and published by Activision, Transformers: Devastation is a bit of a modern cult classic. If you love fast-paced hack-and-slash action combined with cel-shaded visuals that look like they jumped straight out of the 1980s cartoon, this is an absolute must-have. Finding a clean copy for the PS3 feels great, especially considering how sought-after physical copies have become since it was delisted digitally. I cannot wait to dive into the combo system and see how it holds up.
Area 51 (PlayStation)
On the vintage side of things, I managed to score the original PlayStation jewel case version of Midway's Area 51. This arcade light-gun shooter brought absolute coin-op chaos into living rooms back in the late '90s. While playing it on a modern screen with a standard controller is definitely a different vibe than standing in a dark arcade cabinet with a glowing plastic pistol, the nostalgic value is off the charts. The pre-rendered sprites and cheesy live-action FMV clips are pure mid-90s gold.
