Pirate Game of the Week 061: Super Mario Bros 2 (Genesis)

It's pirate time again! This time around, we take a look at the port for the Sega Genesis of Super Mario Bros. It's referred to as Super Mario Bros 2 because the first one was some weird ass game in which Mario would pick up blocks and throw them at the bad guys. Anyways, this one is more to the true form and it's definitely the entire original game to play on the 16-bit console. Lets check it out. 

The music is not that bad. It's definitely better than most pirates out there so you have to give them that. When you take a look at a bootleg's soundtrack, you definitely have to lower your standards. It's that tough to judge. This one isn't the worst, but it's also not the best!

The graphics are actually decent. The graphics from the All-stars port of Super Mario Bros was used so there isn't much that had to be changed. Mario looks the same way and the levels are designed as well. 

The gameplay is where this game suffers the most! It's downright horrible! It'll take the best of your skills to play this game since it's just that tough. Mario doesn't like to respond as well as the other games. The game is just a painful experience! Be sure to keep yourself in control because you'll lose your mind!

The game is great for drunken nights! It's just going to be a painful experience ^_^ It's better if you have some alcohol in your veins. If you can't drink alcohol, just eat some sugar!

It's an awful game control-wise but other than that, it's just awesome! It's a great addition to your collection if you are into bootleg gems. They pop from time to time...If everything else fails, play it using an emulator!

Retro Game of the Week 132: Lufia 2 (SNES)

 Last time, we talked about Lufia for the SNES. This time around, we will be discussing the sequel, Lufia 2 for the same console. The first one introduced us to an amazing world of fantasy with an awesome story and great gameplay. This one offers another piece of the story. Lufia 2 is actually a prequel to the first installment. The game covers the story of the heroes who's mission was to slain the sinistrals. You will definitely enjoy this and understand more of the story of Lufia. It's a great way to combine the story of both games into one. Lets check out what this game is all about.

 

 Another beautiful score of music accompanies this amazing game. The music is enjoyable from start to finish. You just can't get enough of it. You'll eventually end up adding it to your Ipod to listen on the go. The sound effects are just as good. You'll be listening to 16-bit sound effects at its best. 

The graphics are even more detailed and beautiful than the first. The best part about a second entry of a game is the various improvements you observe from one game to the other. Not to say, this game was released in the console's mature years so it was only fair to see various changes. You'll definitely love this one.

The gameplay is as enjoyable as the first one. You have the classic random encounters and you can even catch monsters to help you fight your battles. This was before Pokemon by the way! You'll be doing some classic grinding and dungeon exploring. it never gets too old though. Increasing your stats and finding better equipment has never been so much fun in a 16-bit game.

So being an RPG, you'll have to play at least 40 hours to finish this one but the replay value comes in when you level up and go to the various dungeons. It's very enjoyable even if it's your only run in the game. It'll never get too boring as you'll always have a goal in mind. Why not reach level 99 with all your characters and become the ultimate monster hunter?

The game is another gem for the SNES. If you are an RPG fan, then this one has to be in your collection. There is definitely no doubt about that! It's a pricey gem but you'll definitely see your money's worth, even to this day!

Retro Gaming News: Detective Conan: The Mechanical Temple Murder Case for Game Boy Color - IN ENGLISH!

After a lot of laborious work, the first Game Boy Color release of Detective Conan is available in English! This is my first full hack after a few aborted attempts at other games. The game itself is all about text rather than skill, so it took a long time - the hardest part was the translating, as my Japanese isn’t all that great and it takes me a while to get the translation right.
The GBC is an ideal system to do, because while it’s still relatively primitive, it also has huge carts, way bigger than strictly necessary. So nothing in this game was compressed, making my job a whole lot easier.
It’s not the most challenging game out there, but the story is entertaining, especially if you’re familiar with Detective Conan. The quality of dialogue will make or break this translation, so efforts were made to get it sounding as natural and interesting as possible.
Enjoy! And hopefully the second game will come eventually, too!

I’m not sure exactly what type of game this is due to all the text, but it looks really neat. There’s some nice cutscenes for some of the dialog with some totally sweet looking backgrounds (as far as Gameboy graphics go), and they have this neat effect for text display where a huge-ass portrait of the character speaking scrolls in from offscreen and it’s like *BEWM* and then the person talks. When you’re done with the cutscene thing, you’re in this run-of-the-mill overhead view type thing where you examine lots of stuff in these three rooms, but never turn up anything that lets you go to the next area. Well, I’m pretty sure it’s obvious what you’re supposed to do when you understand the dialog, but I’m sure you know how it goes when you can’t. But I digress. This game has lots of promise. Check it out!
