Find of the Month (March)

Kid Icarus took top honors not only for the long await but mainly because it came with an awesome title as a bonus which is the original Kid Icarus with some 3D effects. Can't say no to this one!!!

Ads From The Past 212: Dragon Warrior 2 Contest (NES)

So before we could just click to participate in contest, we had to mail our entries and wait ohhh around a month or two for an answer. This contest flyer is one example of how tough it was to win back then...

Retro Gaming News 117: Seven New Sega Master System Dumps Released!

There are still new games appearing for old consoles and handhelds. There are seven new releases that just reminds us that there is still a lot of more hidden gems to find out. The ace in this release would be Nemesis (Gradius). A total wonder for sure!

Chrono Trigger HD Rumors

So this picture should tell you the purpose of this post. There are anonymous programers working on a Chrono Trigger remake, a real remake unlike the re-releases of the game on the NDS and PS1. We are all eager to see what is up in store for this classic title. The title screen itself gives me goosebumps!

Retrobeat Tuesdays 006: Captain Tsubasa 2 Compilation

It's time for some 8-bit magic as Captain Tsubasa 2 is up this week with a compilation of all the best songs from the game. Overall, the soundtrack is marvelous and the game is just incredible. It's amazing what the programmers were able to do with so little to work with. This is just to show you that you don't need fancy graphics to create a good game. This is one of the many reasons why I still go back to these titles, they are that memorable and good. Enjoy the compilation!

Retro Gaming News 116: War Room Challenge - Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

"Advance Wars 2 - Black Hole rising was the second of the quirky turn based strategy wargames that got released outside of Japan on the Gameboy Advance. While not as well recognised as its partner series Fire Emblem, it has a cult following of some extremely skilled players.

The War Room challenge is actually the second attempt at a full challenge mode for the game, with the first attempted in the very early days when the map format wasn’t even known so it was mostly substitutions and new goals for maps. This hack is a much fuller implementation of what was aimed at a good six years ago, aided by a huge understanding of how the game works and all the hacking advancements that have happened over that period.

The original intention for the project was to develop a new War Room challenge for Advance Wars 2 in about two months with some fun maps and a few new challenge. Instead, it has turned into something that’s taken over a year to put together, complete with a large amount of refinements and gameplay additions. Lots of music, graphics, maps and assembly code were generated solely for the hack. The more enthusiastic members of the Advance Wars community were also involved - helping with graphics, map design, utilities and playtesting.

Complete with new COs from the AW series, plenty of challenging maps and a bundle of hand-coded new features, this is a definitive hack to play for Advance Wars fans (or people who like turn based strategy games!). All the challenges present are hand-crafted by Xenesis and many, many members of the Advance Wars community with over a year’s worth of refinement.

Game Features:

  • 30 New War Room Maps to play on - Some remixes of existing maps, most brand new from the AW Community.
  • Tutorial map with summary of game rules, scoring and new hack features.
  • Each map has an info dossier with the par time and author of the map.
  • Each CO has unique combat abilities in the War Room setting. Some COs from Advance Wars Dual Strike and Days of Ruin make an appearance as well!
  • Improved high score support - The game records S-ranks achieved on each map with each CO.
  • Improved status screens - The unit status screen now shows CO abilities more accurately and with more stats.
  • Pre-deployed maps provide unique army compositions depending on your CO selection - a feature returning from Advance Wars 1!
  • New deterministic weather rules for fairer scoring!
  • Extended Status Screen - Shows your rank in progress and whether you have S-Ranked this map with the current CO.
  • Improved Enemy AI - Enemy COs no longer use CO powers when they’d have no reason to use them and use them more intelligently!
  • Unlockables - Earn more COs by scoring S Ranks on maps!
  • Play against or as the series’ evil villains - Caulder, Sturm and Von Bolt"

Ads From The Past 210: Pocky & Rocky (SNES)

One of my favorite games for the SNES is here! Pocky & Rocky deliver very fun multiplayer action but that's not all, if you don't have any friends then single player will do. I just think it's more fun to play with a friend even if it's only a game.

Some News...Famicom Guide, Emulation News, and Retro Gaming Life Shoppe!

So I think it's about to let you guys know on what's going on. As you can see, the blog is back to its normal self minus the emulation updates which were voted out due to the fact that nobody cares about emulation updates nowadays. In other news, Famicom Guide keeps getting updates so be sure to visit as the collection keeps growing more complete! We are about to get to letter I in the Famicom set so we are pretty much at the half way point. Subscribe naow!! Finally, the Retro Gaming Life Shoppe will launch in two months so stayed tuned for the amazing items we'll have in store for you at great prices! It's so exciting that I myself can't wait for that day. Please keep visiting and keep helping us stay alive!! Until then, take care!

Retro Gaming News 115: Flying Hero - Bugyuru no Daibouken English Translation Released!

"Flying Hero is a cute ‘em up by Sting and SOFEL.

While there’s nothing particularly groundbreaking, it’s still a fairly good shooter and quite challenging.

Patch is provided in both IPS and UPS. The checksum has been corrected, so it should be OK if the patch has been applied successfully."

Finds 404: Kid Icarus Uprising and 3D Classics Kid Icarus!

I was able to pick this up yesterday at Gamestop. One of the many reasons I got it was mainly because I have been waiting over 20 years for another Kid Icarus game! I've also though the 3D Kid Icarus bonus game was totally worth it. I played it and loved it, so many memories indeed. Furthermore, the game is actually lots of fun although I keep going back and forward playing the classic Icarus game to the new one. I hope some of you were able to pick this up as well! Don't forget to register the serial number at Club Nintendo to redeem your coins! You know you can use them to get some games as well so that's even more gaming goodness coming your way! That's all for now ^_^

Retro Game of the Week 104: Kid Icarus (NES)

With the release of Kid Icarus it was only fair to pick the classic counterpart as the pick for this week. The game itself is not for beginners or crybabies. It's one of the toughest NES games around and does rivals the difficulty of Ghost n Ghouls for the same console. The game does require lots of patience but does get a lot more bearable later on especially when you get the better weapons and level up. Yes, you do get more health bars and believe me, you'll need them. So why not step back into the past and take a look at Kid Icarus for the NES.

Retro Gaming News 114: Samurai Pizza Cats English Translation

"People who watch the show should love this game. For everyone else, though, it’s just a platform game. It ain’t bad, but nothing to drool about. You have five different cats, and can switch them out at any time, and I can only assume that they do different things. One of them breaks rocks, that’s all I can figure out. It’s all very nice and colorful and the control is pretty good, so have fun with it. Oh, and there’s a hell of a lot of storyline in this game for a boring ol’ platformer."
